something I have to try not to think about too often as the parent of a disabled child is the fact that in an active shooter situation she simply would not understand or know what to do or even necessarily follow every direction, and no amount of drilling at school is ever going to change that

“They famously flew a banner saying “Bored? Tired? Try L7” over a Lilith Fair show. The next day, they flew over the Warped Tour: “Warped needs more beaver. Love, L7” was their message to that testosterock festival. “We hit them both,” Sparks says.”

This def happened. I started the #NoSnyderFellowship hashtag on Twitter in 2019 and worked with my comrade Leslie Mac, several Harvard alumni etc... to force him out. Tiffany started a petition (thousands signed), we had Twitter power hours, etc... A great example of successful digital organizing.

I'm not saying subscription software is the answer, but there have been times in my life when I could afford none of it — for a year in the 2010s, I didn't even have my own phone — and having enough money to make my digital life easier feels like drinking fresh squeezed OJ. What a luxury

Great reporting from Bloomberg. Interesting that 1) views are almost entirely bots, these rarely get organic traction 2) closely focused on Twitter but TikTok and Bsky also noted as venues 3) Twitter does take (most of) the accounts down 4) the kicker!!
“Even though they’re not actually making an impact on the US midterms or the way people vote, they’re probably still going to use this as a kind of a measure of success within Russia to report back to say how effective the campaign was,” Graphika’s le Roux said. “They rely so much on those inflated metrics to prove their success.”

Some of it might be timing: AI only really got very good at math when the big companies were much more established and concerned about maintaining their public image. Some of it is prestige. But a lot of it is just the economics involved.

I’m glad AI companies are making efforts to at least appear open to working with mathematicians and other scientists, but it is striking that there weren’t similar efforts, even pro forma ones, to partner with writers, artists, and musicians. Even for movies, they had to be brought to the table

I thought Fagles’s translation of Aeschylus’s Agamemnon was haunting and fragmented and poetically modern and now holy shit I have read Anne Carson’s translation and it is all of those things but riding a jet engine at midnight through an abandoned prison, it is just so witchy, and dark, and great
