It’s time to stop adhering to a decade-old referendum that caused us nothing but problems. An increasingly volatile world now changes faster, year on year. The days of Empire are long gone. We cannot survive alone. We need the power/safety of our neighbours. Unity not isolation.

Iranian authorities are unlawfully executing protesters and political dissidents on a weekly basis, a relentless attack on the right to life. From March 18 to the end of August 2026, Iran’s authorities announced the executions of 29 people in connection with recent protests. bit.ly/4cA0RCP

It’s not the biggest element of the story, but this aspect makes me particularly furious. Perhaps the cruelty in taking something not really in the public interest but clearly very personally important to Jason Arday, and suggesting it never happened, when basic research would show it did.

Watched this today and isn't it depressing how exactly the same 'it's silly to import hydrocarbons when you can destroy your own environment while enriching the ruling class' argument is still spouted by the UK establishment and media today. Great play. So much to think about but also storytelling!

Elon Musk is planning to spend up to $200 million to help Republicans in this year’s midterms. That’s just 0.024% of his total net worth. Oligarchs can rig the system at the expense of everyone else, and only spend pennies doing so. We must get Big Money out of politics.

So in some ways, it's a actually remarkable that the anti-data-center movement reflects an emergent 'wisdom of the crowd' of sorts that seemingly exceeds the information possessed by most voters. 6/6

Given voters’ stated preferences (72% want to slow AI development), if this information was truly widespread, they'd likely want to tax compute in order to slow scaling. And a natural way to start that is by raising the cost of building new data centers. /4

Let’s leave aside whether these are remotely correct as predictions. But these really are clearly stated aims: indeed, it's OpenAI's founding mission, Meta named its division Superintelligence Labs, and one lab is literally called Safe Superintelligence Inc. 3/

20/20 I do not expect a general Hormuz reopening in the next 2 weeks, or the ending of #TheHormuzCrisis. The likely direction is fragmentation, but it would seem there is a lull in the attacks in Hormuz while negotiations are occurring. Elsewhere, the situation is deteriorating.

19/20 Four things matter now: 1) Enforcement of Iran’s reported blacklist 2) Oman’s response to military control and charges 3) Whether LUTUF or SIBU 1 joins the existing pirate-held vessel reports, and 4) Any verified Houthi strike north of Bab al-Mandeb.

11/20 On 11 August, TIHAMAH was struck off Al-Mokha and seafarers were killed. Reports indicate that rescuers also came under fire. On 18 August another unmanned cargo vessel nearby was hit by several projectiles and declared a constructive total loss.

10/20 In the Red Sea, the Houthi campaign remains principally directed at Saudi-linked traffic. But its geographic reach, and the danger to everyone else, are much wider than that selective description suggests.

9/20 The Gulf of Oman is the seam between the competing systems. The US blockade applies to ships entering or leaving Iranian ports, while Iran monitors the approaches. Destination, ownership history, AIS behaviour and responses to VHF can all affect how a ship is classified.

8/20 Oman still talks about restoring freedom of navigation and smooth trade. Iran talks about permitted countries and a route usable only after Iran decides to reopen. The reported 30-day process and 60 days of free services have not begun.

7/20 I cannot find an authenticated copy of that list, so it is evidence of Iranian intent rather than a usable blacklist. Iran may demand information or payment for passage, while US sanctions may punish the same cooperation. This solidifies the current competing systems and confusion.

5/20 Traffic flow has risen from its lowest point but remains far below normal. Kpler recorded 13 commodity-vessel transits on Saturday and four on Sunday. Dark passages may raise those figures, but this remains selective movement rather than reopening. This is not the 1000's reported by #Trump

4/20 There were no confirmed Hormuz attacks in the 48 hours ending Sunday. That is welcome, but not evidence of safety. It is also important to keep remembering the scale of the impact of this conflict. The IMO total is 68 confirmed incidents and 19 seafarer fatalities.

2/20 Iranian control, US blockade enforcement, Houthi attacks and revived Somali piracy are becoming connected parts of the same maritime problem. This is all due to the degradation of the usual systems of operation, military and commercial, that kept traffic flowing in the region.

Frustrated with the election pundits talking as if votes only 'swing' from one party to another. I did some analysis of the results, and my modelling (based on votes only, not polls) suggests that the largest movement since 2024 local elections (by a long way) is from 'Did Not Vote' -> Reform
