Taylor Scheinuk @taylorscheinuk.com · 2hIf I was on the jury I'd point it out to someone first rather than just recuse myself. I can't imagine they're allowed (and if they are, they oughtn't be) 000
Taylor Scheinuk @taylorscheinuk.com · 2hQuick reminder that the main justification behind California High-Speed Rail is that it's still the cheapest way of addressing the shortage of passenger capacity linking the northern and southern California megaregions. It really is that boring; that's why opponents have to make it a culture war. 061
Taylor Scheinuk @taylorscheinuk.com · 2h(to be clear, the article itself is actually pretty on-point but my issue is that many people who don't directly care about rail and transit will see this headline, digest its inferred meaning, and never read the article, further exacerbating the problems faced by rail and transit) 010
Taylor Scheinuk @taylorscheinuk.com · 2hThis framing is so disingenuous, especially considering how many ppl form opinions on articles based on the headline/title alone. Doing "high-speed rail" (which reminder, Brightline FL is NOT) the way it was done in Florida wouldn't work anywhere else either. 120
Taylor Scheinuk @taylorscheinuk.com · 5hLooking forward to the day that the Starfucks Sacramento location at L & 10th is replaced by one of our regional homegrowns. I hate how much of a car sewer L and 10 are in this area (for now) but the views of the newly-refurbished Unruh Building from that corner are fantastic. 020
Taylor Scheinuk @taylorscheinuk.com · 5hHere's my explanation of how my being a car enthusiast does not clash with but rather compliments my also being a stalwart #urbanist, #transit advocate, and #cycling advocate 010
Taylor Scheinuk @taylorscheinuk.com · 7hThis would be one of the hardest things to give up moving from my current prewar building to a more modern one. When they refurb'd the interior 10 years ago they refurbished the double-hung windows to be fully operable and it's lovely. I get to listen to the host of sparrows arguing on my terrace. 010
Taylor Scheinuk @taylorscheinuk.com · 06/10/2026Actually the real problem is the entire structure by which we fund projects. Rather than force local agencies and governments to compete Hunger-Games-style for a limited number of grants they can't count on getting, we should have guaranteed funding for planned service-oriented improvements. 010
Taylor Scheinuk @taylorscheinuk.com · 05/10/2026If you trace our obsession with home ownership back far enough one of the OG reasons is that the wealthy realized it was easier to break unions if their workers had mortgages and furniture payments to make at the end of every month. 120
Taylor Scheinuk @taylorscheinuk.com · 05/10/2026I think there's a catch here though which is that most of the sprawl housing is ugly on the outside, has pretty finishes on the inside, but is actually BUILT insanely cheaply and badly. Corporate builders scam and rip off buyers every day by doing shoddy work and trying to trick buyers into paying. 010
Taylor Scheinuk @taylorscheinuk.com · 05/10/2026Well that needs to get fixed during the interim. It'll be a number of years before revenue trains run on those tracks (aside from the wine train) so the bus service should be increased. 100
Taylor Scheinuk @taylorscheinuk.com · 05/10/2026Need to put a rush order on that new Napa corridor rail service and then rework the bus network around it like a spine 110
Taylor Scheinuk @taylorscheinuk.com · 04/10/2026And in case anyone needs the reference, you CAN incorporate modern safety features and mandated design changes and keep a car relatively compact. The decision to bloat cars and trucks to ridiculous sizes is WILLFUL and a manifestation of pure greed and excess. (See 1990 Mazda Miata vs 2016 model) 000
Taylor Scheinuk @taylorscheinuk.com · 04/10/2026In that regard it's actually oddly similar to the ebike situation, where we actually did have laws in place but weren't enforcing them. 000
Taylor Scheinuk @taylorscheinuk.com · 04/10/2026The wild thing is that there are multiple things about modding a truck like this that make it extremely illegal for street use. We just basically enforce none of those laws in most states. The idea that you would get pulled over for any of them like you would in the EU is almost laughable. 110
Taylor Scheinuk @taylorscheinuk.com · 04/10/2026Emperor's New Groove so far is the most evergreen movie in my lineup. 020
Taylor Scheinuk @taylorscheinuk.com · 03/10/2026Lighting and shelter were the first thing i ever openly beefed with an agency over. New Orleans RTA installed new (non-BRT) bus shelters in 2017/18 in some places. The shelters were awful though. They had dim, solar LED point lights and PERFORATED WALLS which were useless in heavy rainstorms 020
Taylor Scheinuk @taylorscheinuk.com · 02/10/2026At least in the US it tends to exist in the more extreme sprawl suburbs and exurbs. Growing up in New Orleans, the first I heard of it was some community on the northshore or up by Baton Rouge. It was bizarre to us locally. 070
Taylor Scheinuk @taylorscheinuk.com · 01/10/2026I've pushed them into empty parking spaces before but apparently i've not yet been enough concurrently bad moods to go fully off the rails, lol. 000
Taylor Scheinuk @taylorscheinuk.com · 01/10/2026It's particularly infuriating if you ride a wider-than-"typical" bike that can't fit into the rack spacing. I can only lock to the very end of the Noodle racks at my grocery and frequently have to move multiple grocery carts to access them. 020
Taylor Scheinuk @taylorscheinuk.com · 01/10/2026When i see this it takes every ounce of strength in me not to do something like push them all out into the parking lot aisle. 240

Taylor Scheinuk @taylorscheinuk.com · 28/09/2026Personally I like to buy stuff. Heard too many horror stories of ppl "buying" something only for the streaming platform's license to end and they lost access to it. Plus if you buy on Bandcamp you send a lot more of your purchasing power to the artist's pockets. 120

Taylor Scheinuk @taylorscheinuk.com · 26/09/2026We see a similar effect in Urban/Transportation planning and policy. More than half a century of our lives being lived entirely dependent on automobiles has warped our environments and our perceptions of reality in many cases. Taylor Scheinuk @taylorscheinuk.com · 24/09/2026It's astonishing that this guy can't draw the connection between him thinking it's okay for us to abandon basic intellect and skills and the genre of sci fi where a post-technological human civilization either struggles to maintain or is farmed by computers it no longer understands. 040
Taylor Scheinuk @taylorscheinuk.com · 24/09/2026I'd guess maybe a stencil that's been designed so that median adult cyclist can read it from a certain number of feet back. But that wouldn't work if enough ppl are using the corridor. Maybe hang a small metal street sign from the underside of the pedestrian walk signs? 000
Taylor Scheinuk @taylorscheinuk.com · 24/09/2026I was just talking about the larger station complex with a friend who lives in Calgary but didn't spot the entrance to this train hall until just now, cool! 000
Taylor Scheinuk @taylorscheinuk.com · 24/09/2026In cities, the car simply does not pencil out as a major part of the transportation system of the future. There's simply not enough room for them to operate as scale, as anyone who's used to sitting in traffic will have experienced. Cities must emphasize all other modes and restrict cars or die off. 000
Taylor Scheinuk @taylorscheinuk.com · 24/09/2026One big reason that services like @waymo.bsky.social are NOT the climate solution they claim to be is that the one part of the transportation network that they might actually be useful, low-density rural areas, are the places they're least interested in operating. 100

Taylor Scheinuk @taylorscheinuk.com · 18/09/2026We also need to break the State's nasty habit of only ever picking one thing at a time to spend money on. High speed rail is critical to California's future but it won't be much use if people can't get to and from the stations. We need huge, simultaneous investment in regional rail across the state~ 190
