Airline travel has gotten so miserable 🥲 More delays, later arrivals, more maintenance issues, higher prices, and lots of “we apologize” — regardless of carrier. It’s a racket.

Wisconsin’s college admissions law has unintended consequences
Policymakers touted the law's goal of keeping top students in-state and demystifying UW-Madison's admissions. Early results raise doubts about its impact.

What we do matters! This is one of my fav emails. I didn't invent direct admissions, but I'm lucky to work with many states designing, piloting, & evaluating these programs. We don't know all the answers yet, or how effects fully vary across people and places, but we do know it matters: Just listen!
Screenshot of an email. Subject: "The impact of Direct Admit on our family." Sent Friday, August 28, 2026. From and sender name redacted. To: Taylor Odle.

Body: "Hi Taylor, After reading the UW LC magazine, I learned you are the 'inventor' of Direct Admit! This program had a MAJOR impact on my daughter who never thought she would be accepted into so many colleges (for fall 2025 start date). This process boosted her self-esteem which was marred from the consequences of the pandemic and loss of learning.

The ONE LETTER showed her that she was smarter than she thought.

The ONE LETTER gave me a planning tool for finances.

The ONE LETTER saved so much time by not having to apply separately and wait for a response. She didn't even have to use the Common App or worry about an essay!

She is thriving at UW-[redacted] with a 4.0, even though she had a rocky couple of years in high school. Thank you for your work and presentation to the Board of Regents. Direct Admit eliminates the months of worry about 'where will I get accepted' and 'where will my child be living.' You did a great job!

PS In her letter, there were two colleges that didn't participate. It would be nice to have all UW's included. There is already an underlying theme, based on my anecdotal research that 'UW-Madison is impossible to get into, so why even try.'

Thanks again, [redacted]"

I don't understand academia's obsession with citations. 😅 I care way more about a policymaker picking up my paper + doing something with it than about whether you wrote my name at the end of a sentence. We should spend more time measuring impact based on the former!

But these take considerable infrastructure to operate & there's no credible evidence that they function as intended. Should we do more to support transfer & avoid credit loss? Absolutely! But we must deliver credentials that matter in the labor market—to the students who stand most to benefit.

Fact Sheet: The Trump Administration is Making College More Affordable
Higher education has been one the fastest-growing expenses for American families over the past 40 years. A significant driver of skyrocketing prices has been uncapped access to federal student loans.
