I think about the episode of 30 Rock where Liz Lemon realizes she was a bully a lot. It felt far more accurate than any other media bullying even with how cartoonish it was. I definitely saw groups of popular kids be mean at times, but it always felt more like occasional dickishness than bullying.

If politicians win on a bad platform they immediately start talking about how winning was a “mandate” to carry out that bad platform. The argument to not pressure them before is such a bad faith, anti-democracy argument.

So you’re just like, completely uninformed on this issue then? If you haven’t been paying attention to how these anti-human rights laws have been playing out or what has been proposed by the politicians backing anti-trans laws, why do you feel qualified to talk about it?

Why play into their hands when it’s such an overt scapegoating tactic? When trans people lose, we all lose.

This is ignoring that trans people playing in sports is basically a non-issue that POLITICIANS have drummed up concern for in the populace with extremely aggressive scapegoating propaganda as a means to divide us so they can do whatever they want while we fight amongst ourselves.

A lot of people don’t realize the dust bowl wasn’t a natural phenomenon. It happened when agrobusiness interests dramatically transformed the plains without regard for drought, and created vicious dust storms that choked whole families to death. That’s what I think of when I read about data centers.

I was there and I talked with people. He’s very wrong. That’s definitely how the commissioners kept talking to the crowd though, as if those who opposed were outsiders. There also were absolutely zero busses of people in the very crowded fairgrounds parking lot.

You've lost any faith from the American people you had. Now that you've caved and given us nothing, the blame for the pain of the shutdown falls squarely on your soldiers. You are a corporate-serving monster and traitor to the American people. Step down now. America hates you.

“I want you to understand what it is like to live in Chicago during this time.” aphyr.com/posts/397-i-...
I want you to understand what it is like to live in Chicago during this time.

Every day my phone buzzes. It is a neighborhood group: four people were kidnapped at the corner drugstore. A friend a mile away sends a Slack message: she was at the scene when masked men assaulted and abducted two people on the street. A plumber working on my pipes is distraught, and I find out that two of his employees were kidnapped that morning. A week later it happens again.

An email arrives. Agents with guns have chased a teacher into the school where she works. They did not have a warrant. They dragged her away, ignoring her and her colleagues’ pleas to show proof of her documentation. That evening I stand a few feet from the parents of Rayito de Sol and listen to them describe, with anguish, how good Ms. Diana was to their children. What it is like to have strangers with guns traumatize your kids. For a teacher to hide a three-year-old child for fear they might be killed. How their relatives will no longer leave the house. I hear the pain and fury in their voices, and I wonder who will be next.

Understand what it is to pray in Chicago.

As an ex-mormon, it's very jarring to go from having built-in community to nothing, so a lot of ex-mormons have learned how valuable the work of intentional community building is. (Obviously there are also cultural elements within the church that contribute, but I think leaving is a part of it)

The problem is that there aren't actually "red states" and "blue states". They're all purple states (that include a lot of people who are fed up with how right-leaning and anti-working class BOTH parties have become). We need to be able to form coalitions across state lines.

Does Cox think he's doing a good job of "disagreeing better"? Because more and more he just feels like an anti-human rights corporate fascist that knows how to be fake friendly while causing pain to his constituents. He's not uniting or kind, he just pretends to be "nice" while Trump doesn't.

I scanned dozens of newspapers from around the U.S. & world. On average, international newspapers cover the widespread protests against Trump/Musk and for democracy much more prominently on their covers than those in the U.S. This isn’t due to deadlines, protests were daytime in the U.S. #handsoff
The San Jose Mercury News and Arizona Daily Star cover protests prominently; the Boston Globe and Dallas Morning News do not.The Philly Inquirer covers protests above the fold; the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Newsday and NY Daily News don’t have protests on the cover or have only a blurbThe Detroit Free Press and Minnesota Star Tribune cover protests front and center; the LA Times has a tiny mention in bottom right corner; the SF Chronicle doesn’t have it on coverThe NY Times has a picture of protests on lower left of front cover; The Washington post has a tiny picture in bottom strip

The biggest thing we need to do is let people know that the protests are FUN. Yelling fuck the man is fun. You will meet fun people. We also need to make them more fun. Bring grills like the French. Bring instruments like it’s Mardi Gras. Give people a reason to spend their weekend in the streets.

Not voting and not being aware or caring are very different things. Between intense voter suppression, people who didn't want to vote for genocide staying home, and people in minority parties in their state not seeing the point, there are many people who didn't vote who care very deeply.

Overall, while I think it's hard to substantiate as a hard "fact" (especially where it's not clear how gendered the word gay is for Bregman) the quote does seem to point to a general vibe in Hollywood where stars playing gay people was so far from the norm it was basically non-existent.

It does seem odd that Vito Russo doesn't bring up the significance of Pacino playing that part when talking about the movie if it was a first, though that might have been less of a concern for him at the time since he frames it more as a titillating freak show rather than meaningful representation.

I'm skimming through The Celluloid Closet, and nothing is jumping out as an equivalent level star playing an equivalent level of openly gay, though there are plenty of less big stars, less big movies, and less overt roles.

While I think there are a handful of examples that push up against this, I think it's fair to say that a comparably "major star" hadn't played "a gay" as openly or in as mainstream a film up to that point.
