OPENING LINE
The last day of life as I knew it began with a thunderstorm.

The rain slammed the pavement in sheets, creating a dark, slick look that reminded me of spilled oil. It drummed against the windows, a fuzzy background static that blended well with the sickly gray tint of the sky.
