A Twitter friend tweeted last year about ticks at the beach leaving the body of a dead cormorant in California. I was literally on a plane at that time but had to ask her to get them for us. Months later, I can't wait to share our short communication about the tick-borne pathogens we found.

That's why I love them. People in Academia often like dismissing the importance of being a nice person. People don't need to be loving teletubbies but, being morally good, being able to show kindness, and being around others who do the same clearly makes the whole thing a very different experience.
