Am I reading this wrong or does the lede to this article state the opposite of what his paper argued: "he won an award for a paper arguing the Constitution only protects non-whites." Didn't his paper say the constitution only protects white Americans?

There are also chats and discords with tons of people all using aliases which means you often don’t really know who you’re talking to and people feel they can say whatever they want and it’s secure. Is this security or we just larping?

The whole point of a march or a protest is taking some level of risk (very little in the case of most marches, which are police-sanctioned and escorted) to make a public-facing political statement.

We should be smart about how we communicate and conduct certain actions, but feels like "security culture" among activists is making us worse at it. Particularly insistence on anonymity when people who are relatively safe are doing public-facing, legal demonstrations.

Rental brokers are the dumbest thing ever

If you want this Boston apartment, you’ll have to get past this 22-year-old — and pay him thousands - The Boston Globe
Massachusetts lawmakers may put an end to the tenant-paid broker fees — typically equal to one month's rent — often required to sign a lease. We followed one broker as he spent a day earning his keep.

NPQ nails it here. The problem with "the list" at the Chronicle is it gave no context or analysis, and no thought to consequences. Gotta do better than this.

There has never been such a thing as a completely neutral journalist but it's even more apparent today. And yet many of them still don't seem to realize it or refuse to admit it. And for what? What are they holding on to besides their professional stature? They all think that if they confess that they believe in anything they’re violating their little fraternity's oath of objectivity. That entire standard is just made up! It's not real. Journalists are like you can’t say Macbeth in the theatre and we’re all supposed to buy into their delusion.

I'd rather be a decent human being than a journalist in good standing but maybe that's just me.

I've always found the Chronicle's ever-neutral, bridging divides stance to be problematic. This strikes me as what happens when a news outlet won't take a stand.

I really don’t mean this as an attack on your work just pointing out what gets missed in these discussions and hoping the city can do better by its people - all of its people.

I read you all the time. I agree with you often (hell of a lot more than Blake). I don’t agree your dismissal of this survey and your assessment of what Tucsonans want.

Tate Williams @tatejw.bsky.social · 18/02/2025
All of which is to say, there is almost never true public engagement in these decisions and “what I hear from Tucsonans” certainly means the upper middle class. Also vote no on Prop 414.

Tate Williams @tatejw.bsky.social · 18/02/2025
Incidentally many unhoused people filled out the survey in question, on paper by hand, and only thanks to advocate pressure. The city said there were paper copies - there were none until we demanded them. Unhoused people rarely feel welcome in these theatrical town halls.

This is a constant failure in discussions of homelessness. Only the housed get the benefit of being considered part of “the public.” The unhoused merely a nuisance the public must contend with.

Tate Williams @tatejw.bsky.social · 18/02/2025
That said, I’d recommend actually talking to some of the “street people” he derogatorily lumps together. They are, after all, Tucsonans just as much as any of us are. Not a problem to be disposed of.

Tate Williams @tatejw.bsky.social · 18/02/2025
“What I hear” is an odd way to counter the only data we have on what Tucsonans want. Did @timsteller.bsky.social talk to more than 358 people? If he doesn’t like the sample size, seems like more public engagement is the answer instead of man on the street divination.
