We all know Substack has some nasty politics, but I genuinely don't begrudge writers who can't make the move. Above a certain number of subscribers, it becomes so expensive to run a newsletter anywhere else.

Finally, finally moving my newsletter from Substack (where it hasn't been updated since 2024) to a new platform. Phew.

it is a travesty that the brilliant Indrapramit Das is not more widely known in fantasy and horror fandom. The way Indra pulled South Asian history, politics, monstrosity, and queer love together in one book is a thing to behold

I miss TV shows with 20+ episodes. I miss filler episodes. I miss side stories that mean nothing, and other ones that turn out to be the most brilliant storytelling you've ever seen. Perhaps I am old, but so much made now just tires me.

when I was growing up, I imagined writers sat at desks and wrote in aesthetic spaces. anyway, I'm lying on the floor listening to nightcore with my laptop in front of me at 11pm

I love when the agony and doubt of editing gives way and you suddenly realise what the hell the novel IS, underneath all the words you've already written.

the astonishing miracle of making something someone loves enough to make their own. I will simply never get over it. what a silly, wonderful thing it is to write books.

1361

Tasha Suri @tashasuri.bsky.social · 07/07/2026

so, without giving details, I saw some art of my own characters today and I literally got teary. it's unbelievable that I wrote a thing and someone loved it so much that they made art! their own art! and in the process of loving it made it bigger than I ever could have by writing it alone

[much more significant spoilers for vox machina seaon four] I could never hate a priestess/cleric wracked by grief and love and misled by a powerful divine or eldritch being. it is literally my favourite brand of character.

😂 see, this is the thing! A lot of books I've loved have done it! but the pattern and how prevalent it's become is interesting to me, I want to gnaw on it

120

Tasha Suri @tashasuri.bsky.social · 27/06/2026

perhaps I'll make it a quiet side project and share it with interested friends

110

Tasha Suri @tashasuri.bsky.social · 27/06/2026

only a few books have done this for me in a long while - the duke by anna cowan, the raven scholar by antonia hodgson, the emperor of gladness by ocean vuong are the ones that first come to mind. a snake among swans by hannah kaner, but that isn't out yet.

110

Tasha Suri @tashasuri.bsky.social · 27/06/2026

romance readers don't like outsiders critiquing the genre because it's so often bad faith (fairly enough). but yes, I'm not interested in risking being misinterpreted really!

I hear B&N is having a sale, I think that's cool, and it's hardcover so a discount could be nice there is also an audiobook release too! VICO ORTIZ!

there is for sure an essay somewhere in the venn diagram between romantasy, the ambiguously brown male romance novel love interest, wuthering heights and sheikh romances - but writing it would be like handling a lit fuse

Tasha Suri @tashasuri.bsky.social · 23/06/2026

it's a gothic romantasy about a condemned woman who must earn her freedom by destroying the heart of an evil sorceress in a cursed city called moonscarrow. it is not at all subtly inspired by sleeping beauty, and is also as close as i'm going to get to a villain romance
