I generally think that "toxic empathy" is a fake phenomenon and even a dangerous concept. Then I see certain of the replies here and... come on guys. Please don't embarrass us. You're allowed to think that crimes are bad even if cops pretending to be The Punisher is not the solution.

Liz Bruenig talked about this years ago. Every time she wrote one of her death penalty pieces she'd get tons of right-wing hate mail clearly written by men who had been marinating in a massive amount of interracial cuck porn and it had totally rotted their brains.

Millions of Americans are going to lose friends and family to preventable diseases under this White House. Their agony will be real regardless of who they voted for. When that happens, it's going to be more useful to say "you were betrayed" than "haha, you voted for this, leopardseatingfaces."

I do think one issue Trump is going to face as things go along is that he is uniquely ill-equipped to deliver a message that Americans must tighten their belts and forgo personal comforts in order to further a national project.
