That's beside the point. Nobody's saying that kids should never be taught to consider the motivations of other people. The issue is with suggesting that there is inevitably some good and sympathetic reason for why someone has hurt you. That's a message that can actually put kids in danger.

But also, kids are absolutely capable of understanding this kind of thing. Young kids are deeply interested in issues of fairness, justice, punishment, and forgiveness. They're constantly trying to make sense of the seemingly-arbitrary world they live in. Kids can handle hard ideas.

I don't think that's true at all. you can give kids more credit than that. And if you really do have to dumb down a message so much that it becomes false or deeply misleading, then you shouldn't be teaching it at all.

Right, but surely that kind of message should be a "sometimes" thing. "Sometimes it turns out that the people who hurt you had a reason." But equally, sometimes they don't have a reason or the reason doesn't matter. That happens quite a lot too.

The thing about Woke 1 is that I really do think there were serious excesses, but most of the harms were interpersonal rather than systemic. Like, some of the woke 1 discourse on interracial relationships, for instance, was absolutely insane, but not because it was like a mini cultural revolution.

This case really feels like landmark case for the decline of both textualism and originalism.
