For too long, governments have spent billions managing the consequences of poverty after people have reached crisis point. We support people after they become homeless, after debts become unmanageable, after poor housing damages their health and after disadvantage has become entrenched.

As laid out in our very own Nicolson Report, preventing poverty through properly funded public services, fairer taxation, and a social security system that covers the essentials costs less and works better than clearing up the many health and social issues afterwards. It is common sense economics.
Your taxes pay £75 billion a year to manage poverty after the damage is done. It would cost less to prevent it, graphic image.

If the Treasury needs revenue, it shouldn't target pensioners or squeeze workers' wages. It must look at taxing accumulated wealth more fairly. We shouldn't pit generations against each other. The real question is: how do we ensure everyone has a secure retirement and how do we fund it fairly?

Protecting their income is a vital preventative policy. Under our Prevention Dividend principle, the government must look beyond the immediate cost and recognise that preventing hardship today avoids massive public expenditure on healthcare, debt, and housing insecurity tomorrow.

The triple lock exists for a reason. 🛡️ We urge the Government to resist calls to weaken or abolish the State Pension triple lock simply to cut public spending. Millions of low-income pensioners depend heavily on this protection to survive rising food, heating, and housing costs.
