Spotted in Liverpool – a Hummingbird Hawk moth! Recorded by David Costello on 27th February outside the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool. Hummingbird Hawk moths are typically seen between May & Oct, so encountering one in late winter this far north is unusual.

The unusual macropterous form (f. burri) of the usually flightless Short-winged Conehead. Males are v. difficult to tell from Long-winged C-H but females like this are easier as they have shorter, curving ovipositors. A 1st for me, seen yesterday at Prenton Dell Claypit. @tanyptera.bsky.social
Short-winged Conehead, Conocephalus dorsalis f. burri (the flying form of a typically flightless species). A slender, green cricket, with unusually long, brown wings. This is a female, with a pointed, curving ovipositor.
