My Tangent Space TTRPG group was gonna face off against cybernetic space zombies tonight. But alas, a migraine has launched a surprise attack on me... 😖

They are actually fungus, but the crab body shape was appealing to the hive mind for its minor drones.

You are unable to resist as the creatures move you to a pile of sedated animals inside their nest. You see another person laying there, staring blankly with empty eyes. Soon you join the stare, half awake as your body and mind are subsumed into a greater entity. A single mind. The Amalgam.

You walk into the wilds to investigate an unusual meteor impact. You notice a group of small bulbous crab-like creatures at the site. They move about with perfect coordination, building a nest. They ignore you. You begin to feel dizzy and have to sit down. Something in the air...

I just realized the Star Trek Holodeck has a lot in common with generative AI. It generates stuff based on prompts. It can only use preprogrammed source material. It makes really inappropriate deepfakes. It hallucinates all the time with unintended consequences. Another weird Trek prediction.

If I'm sitting down to play your TTRPG, I don't want the quick start. I don't want the simplified adventure or the basic pregen characters. I want to engage with your setting, make a character of my own, learn the systems you designed, and have the full experience you intended.

Seems a significant portion of the TTRPG playerbase doesn't actually like playing the games as games. They are there for the roleplay and the game is in the way. Some TTRPGs are designed for that, but I don't think a game should contort itself into a lightweight con game if not designed that way.

There also is an interesting comparison between TTRPGs and video games. I don't think you could compress a 4x game like Stellaris into a one hour experience without losing most of its identity. But nobody is asking it to. Video games have the opposite problem where players skip the story.

This has nothing to do with complexity. There are plenty of boardgames that take far more effort to learn than the average indie TTRPG. Yet the latter is expected to present itself in prepackaged bite sized pieces.

For example: A boardgame has a specific expected setup and playtime. Players accept this up front. Short games are short, long games are long. The TTRPG, however, is expected to be playable in short form no matter what it was actually designed for.

I've noticed a big difference in expectations between TTRPG and Boardgames. Boardgame players seem more willing to meet a game where it is and not expect it to meet every possible scenario.

Agreed! X-Com and Mass Effect were big inspirations in how I designed my combat mechanics. I also went for contested rolls so that, even when it's not your turn, you're making tactical decisions on how to respond to things.

An acquaintance knew I was a scifi nerd and offered me a spot at their homebrew Mekton Zeta table. Eventually I took over as GM, running campaigns and making my own custom game mechanics. I never felt like anyone wanted me around before I got into TTRPGs. Everyone is happy when the GM arrives!

I loved Lazarus for the old school GBC aesthetic and really strong rebalance. Super Mariomon is an astonishingly good Mario crossover. Odyssey is a very cool fantastical take, and I'm looking forward to the sequel. Blaze Black / Volt White 2 Redux is a strong DS hack, 2.0 coming soon!
