My grandson is in his last season of flag football in 6th grade. He loves the game so much, but with cerebral palsy, he will never play tackle football. Just seeing his beaming smile on the field makes my heart sing.

Well, it's on all of us. We can't sit back and expect the Dem candidates to rescue us. For that matter, here in eastern Iowa we need Independents and Republicans to vote for Democratic candidates. All of us bear responsibility to GOTV, even if it's just getting to the polls ourselves.

Just because someone voted for Trump doesn't mean that they won't vote for a Democrat. The candidate can build relationships with voters. I've seen voters who start the conversation at the door with "I will never vote for a Democrat", and end with "I can vote for you; do you want to come in?"

The first special election win after the 2024 Presidential election WAS in Iowa, but it was Mike Zimmer, state Senate District 35, who won his election by 25 points over his MAGA Republican opponent. Iowa was strong last year, winning 4 special election seats. We plan to extend that this year!

I know I'm talking about Iowa & State Senate seats, but last January the Dem candidate won a Trump +21 Sen. District 35 seat by +4 against a Trump supporter. Sen. District 1 also had a special election this summer, and the Dem won that race by about 4 points as well, also against a MAGA candidate.

It was a huge GOTV effort from Democrats throughout Iowa; thousands of postcards written, phone calls made, and doors knocked. Special elections are notorious for low voter turnout, but Catelin, Odin, Tyler, Janice, and crew worked very hard for this result!

We're keeping an eye on Iowa Senate District 1 special election on August 26th. Catelin Drey is an excellent candidate for the Democrats and has generated a lot of excitement. She could be the candidate to break the Republican supermajority.

Democrats in Iowa are working hard to recruit good candidates to run next year. My husband won a special election in January in a district that went for Trump +21, and the Republicans have done themselves no favors during this last Iowa legislative session.

I do not understand the hate that underlies so much of the legislation. We are #2 in new cancer rates, and our waterways are terrible, but Republicans are focused on culture wars, erasing the civil rights of vulnerable friends and neighbors.
