i should clarify, when i write people doing bad things, it's because i am bad. they are me. more importantly, when you read about those bad things, they also become you. that's how story works. in fact, you are going to think about murder before this skeet ends. how's that feel, sicko.

'Everything is Fine' by @tamj.bsky.social She was ten minutes late, clammy from the crowds, hair slicked to her forehead and frizzing at her shoulders. The Fire doesn't say anything concerning her tardiness, but she feels its heat swell and throb. More: www.ellipsis-zine.com/writing/ever...

Being a humanities guy in IT has its quirks, like finding narratives in the past to explain the present. Recently, I've been seeing managers and executives going wild over AI because it lets them build stuff which impresses them, and I realized I was having a Henri III in Venice moment. 🧵

I don't recall any previous transformative technologies that had to be sold to the public so hard. No one in 1999 was going, "Guys. Cell phone? It's coming, whether we like it or not. I think it's important, FOR WOMEN ESPECIALLY, to learn about cell phone. So that we're not left behind!!"

I knit & crochet, and the basics apply to both: swatch first to see if the stitch gauge is even close (and if you like the way the fabric looks/feels). Adjust hook size/pattern if needed (might involve math). Try on frequently (easier with crochet, as you don't have a zillion loose loops). Have fun.

With the oceans gone, there was no place left for the ships to go.
A postcard, front and back.

The front is a picture of a large ship (painted with three horizontal red, black, and stripes) inside a giant building in Oslo, Norway. The ship is the Polar Vessel, having gone both to the North and South polar as far as possible.

The back reads: With the oceans gone, there was no place left for the ships to go, and so the sanctuary was built, a ship-sized aquarium (for lack of a better term) for a ship. Just one ship. Only one. See, the builders wondered why they should save more since, without oceans or even lakes, there was no need for ships except as a historical marker, a curiosity, a remembrance of where we had once been and never would be again. The other ships, boats of all sizes and purposes, they rotted on the exposed ocean floor, or became homes for people trying to escape the hungry sun. They kept the flags flying, hoping beyond hope it would rain again.

So today would have been my mom's birthday. The second one since she passed. Grief has been a strange beast. Aggressive in the beginning, an ache over time. Now an occasional sense of unmooring. Time changes things, but doesn't change that she was an amazing woman who I still miss very much 🖤

Laundry Night
Digital art of original characters Aran and Tao as young adults in their early twenties at a laundromat late at night.
The pic has a slight fisheye view and we look straight ahead into the laundry room, where Aran kneels at the ground in front of a washing dryer in putting in some clothes and Tao is slightly behind him, half sitting half leaning at one of the tables and looking down at Aran and smiling. It looks like they could be in conversation and Tao is aging something funny and light hearted. The colors are more fee ish and blue and muted, with some bright fluorescent light on top and some green glow to emphasize the feeling of late night in a dingy little laundromat with neon lights. 🏀🦀
