The campus around me is almost as dead as the leaves on the ground. There are a few people clustered around a coffee station, preparing for a late night of studying. A girl with short black hair runs to the academic building, clutching her skirt to keep it from flying up. Probably late for an evening class or club meeting. Over by the big oak tree, a couple sits on a bench with the unobtainable hope of keeping each other warm. I scoff and keep walking, lowering my head once again.
It’s all pointless.
Everything.
But as I pass, I can’t keep my eyes from drifting over to them. There’s a sharp prick of pain in my chest and I try to blink it away. Rose vines masquerading as fingers press into the deepest parts of me and squeeze, leaving a hollow hunger when the thorns are plucked out one by one.
