Well, actual sea surface temperatures have now passed 30°C (86°F) in the key Niño 3.4 monitoring region for the first time in this data record... 😱 Sign up for next week's state of the climate briefing: climatecentral-org.zoom.us/webinar/regi.... Bring your questions, like on this historic El Niño!
Line graph time series of daily Nino 3.4 sea surface temperatures from 1982 to 2026. This year is currently a record high for this time of year through October 5, 2026. Data is from NOAA OISSTv2.1, and the graphic is created by Climate Central at https://www.climatecentral.org/climate-briefings.

I don’t think everyone realizes how bad things are for US science: For the fiscal year that just ended, the Trump regime withheld $1.4 billion from the National Science Foundation’s research budget, which is about 1/5 of its primary research budget.

The move, affecting about one-fifth of the National Science Foundation’s primary research budget, is the latest sign of how the White House is asserting more control over grants.

Remember, we have made our existence all about money—until the day we no longer exist. Then money becomes meaningless, as does everything we accumulated and accomplished during our relatively brief time on Earth. It didn’t have to be this way.

It’s the old “live for today and to hell with tomorrow” philosophy. Perhaps that would be acceptable if only our own species were affected—we chose this path. But we have no right to “cook” countless other species simply because of the choices we’ve made. Their fate shouldn’t be ours to decide.

Because we aren’t lowering our carbon emissions, it will only get worse each year and its consequences will be globally devastating for marine life and our climate. Considering that we know how to stop this, it’s just insane that we continue to do nothing about it.

Previous Presidents were reluctant to launch a direct attack on Iran—they understood the potential for long-term instability. The fossil fuel industry has little incentive to see prolonged spikes in oil prices because higher fuel costs push less expensive alternatives like clean, renewable energy.
