Disabled people have been discriminated against in every aspect of life: care, housing, employment, transportation and countless others. No one should be codifying assisted dying for disabled people before disabled people are provided with the necessities of life.

With a (sometimes hidden) disability I feel people underestimate the pressure society has put on us to reach certain milestones. Grieving the time I have lost to my illness is both painful and liberating. Doing life slowly and letting go of where I feel should be is a constant journey

That was my thought. I don't know where I would be without the faith my team has in me recovering. Without them cheerleading me to give life a chance despite the length/duration/severity of my illness, who knows where I would be.

As a patient, when I am underweight, I talk endlessly and seriously about wanting to die. Those feelings are very real when in the depths of my illness, and i feel i do have capacity at these times. This coversation was very thoughtful, but I do fear such discussions about palliative care and EDs.

Channel 4 documentary on benefits was ‘atrocity’ and ‘insult’ to disabled people in poverty, say activists
A Channel 4 documentary that claimed to expose the “scandal” of the disability benefits system has been described as an “atrocity” and an “insult” to the millions of disabled people in poverty. The…

Where is the talk of the mass disabling event that was the pandemic? Where is the recognition that we are a genuinely sicker society?

I am 10 minutes into the Channel 4 Dispatches Documentary on benefits, and I'm already enraged at the representation of those with disabilities.

Even having a window in my bedroom door that anyone can look through was enough to trigger my ptsd, we need to be treated with dignity, not constant observations and restrictions. It instils a sense of fear that makes me more dependent on maladaptive behaviours

Most Brits will look at the US reaction to the assassination of United Health’s CEO & think “thank god we don’t have that system, where insurance firms try every trick to deny care even to ppl theoretically covered”…& have no idea that United Health is already “helping” NHS manage access & provision

Obviously milk as it relates to the climate crisis is political, but it feels like they're trying to create a culture war over your milk choices, and that just feels a little hilarious

The lens of ableism devalues and dehumanizes disabled people. The lens of ableism blurs access, accommodation, rights, equity and justice for disabled people in favor of continued exclusion.

I am in favour of assisted dying but im extremely wary until society accepts, appreciates and supports the sick & disabled to live. I don’t trust a society who forever calls us a burden or scroungers to make decisions in our best interests. The article was genius

This is why we need a Labour party that doesn't pander to the far right. Offer us an inspiring vision for the future without sowing more division.

🚨DR UK's Statement on Passing of Assisted Dying Bill We stand firmly against a law that risks pressuring Disabled people into decisions driven by lack of options rather than genuine choice. This bill could reinforce the narrative that Disabled people’s lives are less valuable.

I saw this art and I really don't think people understand how much disabled people like me are framed as "burdens" as it is - maybe it would be better for everyone if we were to end our suffering. It saves our families money & time caring for us. The taxpayer money. So, as seen in Canada...

I'm so sorry to hear that's your experience. Try not to give up hope. We're all fighting for more rights and greater understanding of these problems. I hope things look up for you, and one day, we can abolish the stigma that cripples us

The fact that self-worth is often tied to wage labour can be devastating, but whether you're in work or not, you deserve to feel valued. We are all just trying to survive in increasingly dark times, and if you're still with us, you're doing a great job #mentalhealth #disability #work

I wonder if it's because of the emphasis on the 'working' class. As often people with disabilities can not fully participate in the workplace, we are often ignored as some kind of underclass because we don't neatly fit in within an ideology built around working people? Just a thought

People’s worth isn’t determined by their ability to work. We all deserve a decent living standard regardless. Just under 1/4 of the UK population is disabled, and anyone could become so. Please, ditch “strivers vs skivers” narratives and instead repair our social security net.

Ableism is not casual or benign. Ableism begins with mocking and leads to policies and practices that threaten the lives of disabled people. Ableism is always about the devaluation of disabled people and that is never harmless.

This. I find in eating disorders you have to recover and have an inspiring story before your voice is taken seriously. You have to recover in the imperfect system to change the imperfect system.

As a disabled person, the media landscape in this country is truly terrifying. I'm not 100% sure if the link is intentional, but the way disabled people are framed in the UK does make the conversation around assisted dying more sinister.

Please consider this: ⚠️Oregon’s assisted dying laws (closest to that proposed in 🇬🇧) limit assisted death to terminal illnesses only ⚠️Anorexia cannot be defined as a terminal illness ⚠️People with anorexia have HAD assisted deaths in Oregon 🚨We don’t need to fear a slippery slope. It’s here.

It’s all very well Liz Kendall sounding off about people’s “self-diagnosed” mental health issues, but does she have any idea how nigh on impossible it is these days to get in front of someone qualified to diagnose complex / youth MH, ie a psychiatrist? Even very ill people often being fobbed off.
Kendall said some people who were out of work had “self-diagnosed” mental health problems

To hear how those with disabilities are a burden on a state to go straight into a conversation on assisted dying... I fear for how those with chronic illness will be treated if this goes through...
