So, overall, kinda bad, there's stuff there you can take away from it and I think the theme of The Little Mermaid *the story* works well for Kingdom Hearts the execution of the playable level is one of the worst experiences you could ever have.

That's all fine, but the core story of Ariel, Triton and Ariel doesn't add anything thematically that Peter Pan later and Aladdin before it didn't. Beyond Ariel's desire there's nothing really to latch onto and while Ursula's a good villain in the film she's just kinda a boilerplate villain here.

Another problem is its relation to the story. You could say that The Little Mermaid relates to the overall theme of Kingdom Hearts by Ariel wanting to escape to another world, much like Riku, Sora and Kairi, growing up too fast and leaving their childhoods behind rather than experience it.

The boss fights, both against Ursula are bad. Not especially difficult rather than tedious. The Giant Ursula is known as difficult but I feel it's less difficult in terms of skill and more difficult in terms of patience and something of a skill check. She hits hard.

Atlantis as a level is still an absolute low point for Kingdom Hearts. It's so bad, it feels bad, it looks generally quite bad outside of King Triton's Throne area and maybe the general feel of the sunken ship, but even that's just kinda whatever.

Everyone else does a great job, yeah some can be a little stilted and the child actors can only have so much depth to their performances, but they make a believable world. Hades just sounds rough, doing too much and doing too little at the same time.

The only negatives I'm feeling right now are very superficial really because I'm enjoying myself too much. The one that stands out is Hades. James Woods is just doing an AWFUL job, like he's been given the direction to act like Hades but not engage with the "feel" or "timing" of the delivery.

The narrative and general aesthetic is also very unusual, cryptic, it wants you to piece together the puzzle just as much as the gameplay itself does. And it's also a narrative that feels like even in its rudimentary form wants to push you to think about it subtextually.

It's pretty early days all things considered but I wonder if those vibe coded decomps will disincentivise official production work to get certain titles on newer platforms or if it being so niche won't affect that much. Or if publishers just start commissioning vibecomps outright.
