With $1.5 million from the Ministry of Indigenous Affairs and First Nations Economic Reconciliation, along with $300,000 from Agnico Eagle, the MineOpportunity Challenge can now reach students in larger urban school boards as well as more remote northern communities.

MineConnect CEO Marla Tremblay, whose organization represents Ontario’s mining suppliers, said the top concern she hears from members centres on the labour market. The MineOpportunity Challenge is essentially a response to those concerns.

“There’s always the conversation about how do we get youth to consider it?” Tremblay said. “How do we educate them about what mining really is and what kinds of jobs actually exist?”

The Ontario government is splitting the Director of Education role into two roles that are both called CEO 🤦‍♀️ www.cbc.ca/news/canada/...

The new legislation also establishes two new oversight roles for English-language school boards, with the director of education now becoming known as the chief executive officer. That person would be responsible for financial and operational matters, and would be "required to have business qualifications," according to the news release.

The second role would be a chief education officer, who would be appointed by the executive officer and who focuses on student achievement. That person would need to "hold pedagogical qualifications, including Ontario College of Teachers membership or equivalent," the news release reads.
