Why did it take me two years to read a new book from @nickharkaway.com one of my favorite authors? Until I read the book, I couldn't answer that question, but having completed and loved the book in question, I finally have my answer. 1/12

In honor of Seattle declaring this the summer of Jimothy I'm dedicating my next summer of sci-fi to the adorable raccoon. Green City Wars by @aptshadow.bsky.social follows a raccoon PI through a world of genetically modified animal servants.

I started listening to the audiobook of Shroud by @aptshadow.bsky.social and knew I recognized the narrator from somewhere. Turns out it's Sophie Aldred aka Ace, the 7th Doctors companion. That's.some pretty cool geek cred.

I'm reading the MMPB version of this book with this exact cover. This book exemplifies the transition from the classic Niven era of hard sci-fi to the modern Tchaikovsky era of hard sci-fi. Ringworld >> A Fire Upon the Deep >> Children of Time.

I could totally be wrong but I really don't think people like jazz as much as books, movies, and TV want you to think.

"I will eviscerate you in fiction." I often think about that quote from 'A Knight's Tale' while trying to come up with names for unlikable characters. Not saying I'd do anything like that of course.... All my characters are complete works of fiction.... I just think about that quote is all.

Writers: what do we think about possessive apostrophes following names ending in S? Solo apostrophe or an extra S? Chris' or Chris's? I know what Stephen King says in On Writing, but what say you?

Editing is frustratingly slow sometimes. An hour to get one paragraph right. And it is statistically probable I'll end up deleting it at some point in a future edit. I just keep reminding myself that this is why more people don't write books.

I know I should be editing but a friend got me my very first fountain pen and I'm busy playing with it.

You can tell I recommend a particular @sgj.bsky.social book a lot because when I type 'My' the keyboard automatically suggests 'Heart' then > Is > A > Chainsaw.

It's so tiresome to do, but there is no substitute for reading your draft out loud while you edit.

B&N May be a big box store, but never underestimate the influence of the book sellers that work there. My wife makes sure our favorite local indie authors are well represented. Can you spot the four @cheriepriest.com books at the Issaquah store?

Reading The Drowning House by @cheriepriest.com. What do you call southern gothic that takes place in the modern northwest? Also, not sure what's scarier, the haunted house-wreck or the terribly accurate and depressing descriptions of getting older.

Another lap around the sun. I put this print by Caravaggio, in my office. The painting depicts Jerome as a life long scholar with a skull to remind us of our mortality. For all its flaws, I've sought to constantly better my mind and as long as God blesses me to be in this rock, I intend to continue.

I own at least a dozen of Cherie's books and love every one of them and will be buying this one. It baffles me that she is not more popular. This post is heartbreaking but not uncommon. So few authors can make a living just in their books.

I'm rather proud of myself. I had to jump on Facebook and I saw someone's political hot take. I started to comment pointing out their logical fallacy but then stopped and deleted my comment before replying. I then closed Facebook and walked away happier than if I didn't engage.

"Adopt the pace of nature: her secret is patience." - Ralph Waldo Emerson.
A black paperback pocket notebook that is worn to the point that the black is faded and the brown cardstock is showing through in places and the edges are bent and frayed. Featuring the Emerson quote in this post.
