So, from a player's perspective - who plays a game for the first time - your statement, if I understand you correctly, "there is no meaningful difference between having agency and being proficient at a game", is generally true. So you'll have to qualify your statement, if you ask me.

Tabletop Games Blog - board game reviews and discussions @tabletopgamesblog.com · 29/09/2026
That's true. In general, the more you play a game, the more agency you discover and can take advantage of. In extreme cases, especially for more complex games, you feel like you have no agency the first time you play. Take chess as an example. An experienced player feels more agency than a beginner.

...**think** they can control the dice. They "self-assess" to have agency. Yet, I think we probably all agree that, in actuality, they don't have any agency. The only agency they have in Yahtzee is whether they roll again and what to do with the results. 3/3

...capacity to exert power over it, then you have no agency. Like @peersylvester.bsky.social said, Bingo gives you no agency. Rolling a dice gives you no agency. With your definition, you'd say that people "self-assess" that they have agency. That's what we find when people play Yahtzee. They... 2/3

With those definitions, they're the same thing. I don't think "agency" is "self-assessed". In my view, "agency" is "the capacity, condition, or state of acting or of exerting power", as per Merriam-Webster. It's the "capacity" that is often meant in board games. If a game doesn't give you the... 1/3

Depends on your definitions of "proficiency" and "agency", but generally speaking, I'd say, yes, there is a difference. 🙂👍

Got a couple of personal questions, if you’re happy to answer them: - What game do you own because of the memory attached to it rather than because you particularly enjoy playing it? - What’s the most memorable thing another player has ever done at your table?

I've been making these adorable crocheted plushie button dice as Christmas tree decorations. I love them and want to make more but they do take ages to make so it's hard to know if anyone would want to pay £15.99 for an entirely handmade decoration?

People don’t realize that an argument with a qualifying statement is actually stronger. “All people are emotional” is weaker than “Some people are emotional” for example. The more you qualify, the stronger you make your statement. 🙂👍

But will Osprey Games basically dissolve and empty their inventory and then only what’s left at retailers remains? Or will Osprey / Bloomsbury Publishing keep all the games until they’re all sold? I wish there was an announcement that explained all the details. 😕👍

I was wondering if it's based on books. I'll have to get them. I loved S1, and S2 introduced an interesting way of opening up the story further. S3 just didn't need to go where it went. No need to resolve all the mystery. Let's explore what we have a bit more first. Not sure I want to watch S4. 😒

Yeah. I’d echo what others have said. Set collection is about collecting matching cards/tokens/tiles for scoring purposes. Tableau building is about improving the efficiency/strength of actions, even though sometimes they also improve your scoring ability. 🙂👍
