If you have to bend the definition of butch to fit you and caveat everything, maybe the label doesn’t fit you and that is okay. You can still be a part of lesbian communities and culture without watering down butchness

Not a Girl
Not a Girl
The first time that I realised I wasn't a girl, I was visiting my dad with my girlfriend who was my boyfriend at the time. Do you follow? Anyway, I'd ran out bikinis. More specifically, I'd ran out of bikini bottoms. I'd swam too often, even the Kenyan sun couldn't catch up with all the drying that needed to be done for me to swim as often as I'd wanted to. I've always been most comfortable in the water. I'd jump in any lake I'd come across as a child, I probably still would given the chance. I live in a big city now.
Manchester, to be precise. Hence, I don't come across many lakes. So, I had no dry bikini bottoms but my need to be in the water hadn't been satiated. Do you see where I'm going?
Probably not but that's okay. Stay with me. What I'm saying is, I needed something to cover my cunt. Something to provide modesty for my swim. But, like I said, I was staying with my dad and my girlfriend who was my boyfriend at the time. It's important that I remind you of this because it was her — 'his' at the time - men's swimming trunks that I'd borrowed. And that was my first taste of gender euphoria. Or at the very least, the first time that I had the correct language to make sense of my feelings

For TDOR, here are some excerpts from my MA dissertation on the experiences of Trans Sex Workers. (TW for transphobic violence, hate crime) #TDoR #TDoR2024 #TransDayOfRemembrance #TransAwarenessWeek
1.2 Transgender women
A large amount of literature on trans sex workers specifically emphasises the amount of oppression and abuse that trans women receive. Revolting Prostitutes
(2018) states that "trans women are particularly targeted for violence" (Smith and Mac, p.130) by police in South Africa. Transfeminine sex workers reported a higher likelihood of police interaction than their transmasculine counterparts, with transfem sex workers reporting 83.9 percents compared to transmasc sex workers reporting 65.8 percent (Fitzgerald et al., 2015, p.17). One study that focused on trans women's experiences within the sex industry found that they are often mistreated by police due to their "stigmatized identities as transgender women" (Nadal et al., 2014, p.175). In 2016, Amnesty found that trans sex workers were often subjected to "particularly abusive police practices including intrusive and humiliating full-body searches carried out by male officers on transgender women" (Amnesty, 2016). This was affirmed by a lawyer who stated that there was "a lot of groping and mockery" (Amnesty, 2016). Smith and Mac (2018) reinforce this claim, stating that "trans women are often questioned about their 'biological' status: a demand that invariably reveals an obsessive focus on their genitals." (p.34). Further, a survey regarding trans health care revealed that 91 percent of participants who reported being HIV positive identified as either MTF (male-to-female) trans women or gender non-conforming on the male-to-female spectrum. This is incredibly high when compared to the 3.76 percent of the respondents who reported HIV infection that were FTM (female-to-male) trans men (Grant et al., 2010, p.13).I contend that the high amount of oppression and violence that trans women experience is due to transmisogyny. Transmisogyny refers to a specific prejudice that transfeminine people face which is the confluence of transphobia and misogyny (Kacere, 2014). It is rooted in the belief that femininity is inferior to masculinity and regards maleness and masculinity as superior to femininity. Transmisogyny posits the mockery, hatred and violence that transfems are subjected to, which we are able to see displayed in Amnesty's (2016) research.
Transmisogyny can be seen as evidenced in the violence against trans women; over half of all LGBTQIA+ murders were perpetrated against trans women and twenty-five percent of trans women have been incarcerated at some point in their life (Kacere, 2014). Additionally, "Turkey has reported 1 trans women, the majority being sex workers, murdered in the last ten years" (Joksimovic, 2020, p.88).
Hence, the violence against trans women sex workers is widespread.
Transmisogyny can be helpfully understood in relation to hegemonic masculinity in that they both perform the function of 'Othering' those who are perceived as expressing femininity. Hegemonic masculinity can be understood as the pattern of practice that legitimises patriarchy and thus allows men's dominance over women to continue (Connell, 1995). It refers to the pattern of masculinity that occupies the hegemonic position culturally. Through hegemonic masculinity, homosexual men, men that are seen as less traditionally "masculine' and women are subordinated and othered (Connell, 1995).
Arguably, hegemonic masculinity is a prerequisite to transmisogyny. It posits a belief in traditional masculinity as being superior to femininity and thus, has the potential to view transfeminine people as effeminate, homosexual men who have therefore failed to achieve the masculine values set by hegemony.1.3 Hate Crime
There was a large focus on the risk of violence faced by trans sex workers. Violence against trans sex workers can be regarded as acts of hate crime which "refers to those criminal acts committed because of someone's actual or perceived membership in a particular group" (Levin, 1999, p.8). A study evidenced that trans sex workers are frequently murdered and that this has a direct correlation to their profession: "Globally, trans sex workers make up 62 per cent of all trans murder victims, where the victims' profession is known". (Faye, 2022, p.141). This percentage is even higher in Europe and rises to 88 percent (p.141).
The direct relation to their profession thus correlates with the above definition of a hate crime because the violence is committed because of their perceived membership to a particular group - in this case, being a sex worker.
Furthermore, being trans further increases sex workers' risk of violence: "Cisgender sex workers are safer from these risks than transgender sex workers" (Smith and Mac, 2018, p.20). Arguably, transphobia and transmisogyny are the differentiating factors that further endanger trans sex workers when compared to the relative safety of cisgender sex workers. The vulnerability and safety of trans sex workers is also discussed in The Transgender Issue (2022),
"her trans status and her work on the street combined to make her especially vulnerable" (Faye, p141). There is a consensus amongst the literature reviewed that trans sex workers consistently face violence and are vulnerable to hate crimes. This is substantiated through the use of statistics, anecdotal evidence, and the use of theory which discusses how intersectional identities and oppression converge."Law enforcement officers' internalisation and perpetuation of these stereotypes, combined with the high degree of discretion afforded by vague
"quality of life", "nuisance", "public morality," and prostitution regulations, results in police profiling of trans women, more often trans women of colour and/or migrants, as sex workers, with selective targeting for harassment, detention, and arrest" (Fedorko and Berredo,
2017, p.10).
This can also be seen echoed in the literature surrounding incarceration. It was reported that "people of color were more than twice as likely (46.8%) than their white counterparts (18.3%) to report being "arrested for being trans." Similarly, 58.8 percent of people of color and 35.2 percent of respondents reported being sent to jail/prison
"for any reason" (Fitzgerald et al., 2015, p.5). It is notable that whilst all sex workers of colour are more likely to have interactions with law enforcement than white sex workers, Black and Black Multiracial sex workers reported the highest levels of interaction with police, by far, at 87.3 percent (p.17). Policing and law enforcement that specifically profiles trans women of colour is often referred
"to as "walking while trans" or "walking while Black" (Fitzgerald et al., 2015, p.9). This occurrence having a well-known colloquial name indicates how prevalent this type of racial and gender profiling is for trans people of colour. Hence, trans sex workers' additional intersecting marginalised identities further increase the likelihood of violence, oppression, and harassment.
Additionally, research regarding HIV infection rates in 2010 found that trans respondents reported an "HIV infection rate of 2.64%", which was significantly higher than the "general United States adult population (0.6%)" (Grant et al., 2010, p.13). Although the focus of this study was trans people rather than trans sex workers, it was observed that "61% of those who reported HIV infection [had] engaged in sex work. To consider this …

The Butch plays pool
Photo of me playing pool in a pub wearing a beanie, a black face mask, a tshirt and chinos A Femme-Butch Reader

Merril Mushroom in the 1950s
Now the butch returns her comb to its pocket. She does not reach up to check on her hair, to make sure that all is as it should be. She trusts that she looks wonderful, that her hair is impeccably in place, perfectly styled.
She is satisfied with her performance.

3. The butch plays pool
The butch selects her cue. She eyes the sticks that line the wall, looking every one over from end to tip. The four fingers of each hand are thrust into her hip pockets, thumbs resting outside the fabric beneath the swell of her belly, causing her elbows to jut out from her sides. She tosses her head and throws her shoulders back, nods once, then pulls one hand from her pocket to take the stick of her choice from the wall. Now her other hand comes up to stroke the length of the wood. She feels the weight of the stick, tests its balance. As she sights down it, she strokes it along her cheek. She smiles, moving her tongue slowly back and forth behind her slightly parted lips.
Now the butch sets the butt of the stick against the floor and straightens out the elbow of the hand she holds it with, turning her arm slightly so that her triceps bulge and ripple. Then, giving the stick a little toss into the air, she catches it neatly at the middle and strides over to the pool table, where she picks up the little cube of blue chalk. She blows across the top
of it, looking around the bar, lips pursed into a kiss for the one whose eye she catches. She lowers the chalk deliberately, grinds it suddenly and hard across the end of the cue stick, rubs it around until tiny blue grains shower from it. Gently, she blows away the excess, then leans the stick up against the side of the table.
Now the butch reaches into her breast pocket and pulls out a half-full soft pack of Camels. She gives it a sharp flick of the wrist, and two cigarettes shoot out of the pack a half inch and a quarter inch respectively.
Raising the pack slowly to her mouth, the butch takes the end of the longer cigarette between her lips and pulls it free. She tucks the pack back into her breast pocket, then pulls her Zippo from her hip pocket. She crooks her elbow, raising the lighter. Slowly, deliberately, she flicks open the lid so that it rings, thumbs the wheel smartly, and dips the end of her Camel into the flame. Inhaling deeply, loudly, she snaps the Zippo shut and returns it to her hip pocket. She grips the cigarette between her thumb and first two fingers and takes several more deep drags, blowing smoke out sharply. Then she places the cigarette on the edge of the pool table.
The butch bends and lifts the wooden rack from beneath the table. She runs her fingers suggestively around the lower point of the triangle, grins, raises one eyebrow. Suddenly she flips the rack into the air, catches it, raps it against the palm of her other hand, and sets it down smartly in its proper place with the top point just touching the silver mark. She picks up her cigarette again, smokes some more, then drops the butt to the floor and grinds it out with the toe of her boot. She places her middle finger on the quarter that her challenger has placed on the edge of the pool table, hesitates for just one moment, then slides the quarter off the edge of the table, snaps it up against her thumb, and spins it smoothly into the slot.
The balls crash down. The butch pulls them f…hips, rests the cue stick in the crease between her thumb and forefinger, and wallops the cue ball with the end of the stick. The cue ball hurtles across the table and smashes into the side of the triangle of balls just next to the upper point. With a crash, pool balls scatter across the table, and two solid-colored balls with low numbers roll into the corner pockets.
The butch looks over at her opponent, her face expressionless except for one slightly lifted eyebrow. She casually picks up the chalk and rubs it over the end of her cue stick. She does not smile, but she is very pleased with her performance. She nods magnanimously to her opponent, then turns back to the table to take her next shot.
But, first, she lights another Camel.

Playing Roles by Barbara Ruth from The Persistent Desire: A Femme-Butch Reader by Joan Nestle
Barbara Ruth
Playing roles
Butch and femme?
Yeah, I think it matters.
It slides around
In how we are together
Makes a difference
In who does what for whom And how we feel about it.
But so do lots of things.
When my friends and I hang out
We play roles
The most common ones are
Crip and AB
And who gets which role
Depends on what Needs to be done
Who's most able
At that particular moment.
And yes, it makes a difference In who does what for whom And how we feel about it.
And then there's race
And skin color, within race, And religion, ethnicity,
And the way that none of these Are quite the same.
Whether or not you can speak fluent English And whose English you speak.
Where you come from
THE PERSISTENT DESIRE
If you're illegal
What la migrat you have need to know
When there's a knock on the door.
And class
How much money you have now
How much you grew up with Whether or not you have resources To fall back on
Should you fall.
All of these make a difference In who does what for whom And how we feel about it.
I don't think it's wrong
To ask which one's the butch In a dyke relationship.
It's just not enough.
Ask as well
Who's been locked up And for how long.
Who was raped by her father And for how long.
Whose children have been stolen?
Who's been sterilized?
Who's in recovery
From what?
Who's a suicide survivor?
Who can pass on the street?
All of these make a difference
In how we are together.
So many categories
We don't yet know the words for.
Twenty years ago
If you remembered your incest
You thought you were the only one.
We come to one another
Wounded
And with power.
We come seeking
Speaking WisdomA Femme-Butch Reader
We come close.
Because we're lesbians
We postulate
A universe.
The names we make ourselves
Will have to be
As delicious as our flesh
As unremitting as our rage
As complex and as simple As our loves.
And if you choose to call
Some piece of that Femme and butch
I won't object
So long as you don't think
We've said it all.

Israel’s “right to exist,” as Edward Said wrote, is a metaphysical term that doesn’t seem to apply to any other country. Israel’s right to exist is predicated on negating the existence of Palestinians.
