Aside from PolSci I make apps for my Garmin. As I recently started my postdoc at ESSEC and need to improve my French, I had an idea: apps.garmin.com/fr-FR/apps/c... An app to look up verb conjugations while doing sports (my 30km commute for example). Ideal when listening to French podcasts.

Garmin app for learning French, Spanish, and Italian conjugations whilst doing sports. Useful for listening to language podcasts during long climbs.

I definitely agree on that part. There are a 100 different measures but it is still unclear what the concept really entails sometimes.

There are of course attempts to create a binary criterition, for example both Westphal and Schedler tried this recently. The problem to me is that those criteria share overlap with the democratic norms and thus the outcome and concept are indistinguishable to a certain degree.

‘Polarization’ has become the master concept for diagnosing our current democratic crisis. But this is not polarization. It is the radicalization of the political right. By misdiagnosing it, we risk becoming complicit in the crisis. 🧵 Just out in Perspectives on Politics doi.org/10.1017/S153...

For now I need to focus on actually finishing my dissertation, but updates will follow. If you teach research methods or statistics and want to pilot or adapt it in the meantime, the DGP, dataset, and manual are available on request. Suggestions are also more than welcome! 🧀 (8/8)

The full teaching manual covers many sessions from descriptives and t-tests through fixed effects, DiD, RDD, IV, and PSM. The base code to run all is given in the manual, although there are many still improvements possible and bug fixes necessary on my side. (7/8)

There is a selection-bias cliff at -25g in the weight deviation variable, but not always. Cuts that far below target are recut at the counter, so no receipt is collected. Students see the histogram anomalies in session 1, and learn the mechanisms only much later. (6/8)

The module has cheesy story lines and hooks: variables that appear useless for several sessions before reveals a more complex structure. It is designed to show that first models are rarely the last word, and that exploring the data always pays off. (5/8)

The consumer survey links politics attitudes to purchasing behavior. It covers the 2022-23 Dutch farmer protests: protest support and political preference. These merge to transaction data via customer IDs. Self-reported behavior change correlates poorly with what customers actually bought. (4/8)

Two real events are embedded. COVID-19 lockdowns produced clear spikes in daily sales when bars closed: a natural experiment ready for DiD and synthetic control with competitors. Three lockdown periods are encoded, each with its own restriction level. (3/8)

It is built around a fictional Dutch cheese shop. The idea is to engage students more when the data has characters. Employees with distinct arcs, customers with political opinions, and variables that quietly build toward more complex structure than they first appear to have. (2/8)

Before my PhD I was a TA with a sidejob in a cheese shop. At some point I found myself collecting receipts, writing down the target weight, and digitizing them afterwards. Last weekend I took up the effort and simulated the rest for a teaching module: Cheesy Correlations and Causality. 🧀 (1/8)

Simon, while I appreciate your effort, but I find it highly unlike that the system would change. The constitution only requires some form of PR (art 53), but most-likely a threshold would require a 2/3 majority. Although, some argue a normal majority might work. Which would open the box of pandora.

Call for scholars in political behavior (broadly understood) studying Central & Eastern Europe: workshop hosted by @eui-eu.bsky.social, June 19-20. 2nd edition. Participants from the region can have their travel & accommodation fully covered. Apply by 28/3. More info: www.eui.eu/en/projects/...
The Department of Political and Social Sciences (SPS) at the European University Institute is pleased to announce the second edition of the workshop on political behaviour in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE). The workshop understands political behaviour broadly and is open to papers studying public opinion and attitudes, voting, elections, political parties, inter-group relations, and political participation. The goal of this event is to bring together scholars, both from the East and the West, who empirically study political realities in CEE through within-country, between-country, or between-region (e.g., East-West) comparison. Papers investigating general research questions that are not specific to CEE are also very welcome as long as they comprise a significant empirical component from the region (e.g., half of the studied cases are from CEE). The workshop embraces all methodological approaches, but submissions that employ quantitative or mixed methods will be given priority. Each accepted paper will be thoroughly discussed, and the workshop will offer ample opportunities for establishing professional connections and collaborations. @eui-sps.bsky.social‬

I keep reading that Zelensky shouldn't have risen to the bait. The man is human. He's seen tens of thousands of Ukrainians murdered, their cities blown apart & their children stolen. He was sitting by a man who's looting his country's minerals & praising Putin. And for 40 minutes, he held it in.

It is a bloody shame that there are parties like this in liberal democracies, and especially that other parties are even considering forming a coalition with a party that has to make these kind of promises. As a Dutch saying goes: “Een vos verliest wel zijn haren maar niet zijn streken”
