Lise Meitner (1878–1968) was an Austrian-Swedish physicist who played a central role in the discovery of nuclear fission, the process that would later power atomic bombs and nuclear energy. A brilliant scientist in an era when women were often excluded from academic life, Meitner broke barriers as one of the first women in Europe to earn a doctorate in physics.
Working closely with chemist Otto Hahn, Meitner helped uncover how splitting the nucleus of a uranium atom released massive amounts of energy. In 1938, fleeing Nazi persecution as a Jewish scientist, she escaped to Sweden—but continued her collaboration through letters. That same year, she and her nephew Otto Frisch correctly interpreted Hahn’s experimental results and coined the term “nuclear fission.”
Although Hahn received the 1944 Nobel Prize alone, Meitner’s contribution is now widely recognized. Albert Einstein once called her the “German Marie Curie.” Refusing to work on the atomic bomb, she spent her later years advocating for peaceful uses of science.
