Episode 1 of "On Beauty" introduces the mysterious Diotima, who teaches Socrates everything he knows about love and beauty. Was she real? Most likely. But since the mid-nineteenth century, she's the only figure in Plato's dialogues that is regarded as a fiction.

This is why I think the reception of post-Kantian German philosophy, from Hamann to Hegel to Schelling to Schlegel (even Fichte, sorry Fichteans), has largely been a non-starter. As long as Kant remains the standard-bearer for rigorous or justified thought, his successors are unintelligible to us

One of my most Gillian Rose style convictions is that you ignore Kant at your own peril—& usually end up doing Kant anyway, only worse—& remain at Kant at the cost of your ability to think at all. Kant is still the backdrop of philosophy today, which is why he never needs defending. He won.
