Well here is the promised more pleasant Saint Laurent de Cuves content. I still can't get over how nice the public toilets were. The only thing missing was hostess service. And there were these thick pink lines all over the new road surfaces, I don't know what they were for. Maybe just for trim

Today I went to Saint Laurent de Cuves, a rare back country village with loadsamoney thanks to the Papillons de Nuit music festival. It was incongruously fancy, with a vibe like Margrave in Lee Child's 'Killing Floor'. Impeccable road surfaces, palm and banana trees, huge solar panels.

Here are a few pics I took of the mill and its environs last Autumn, and which I don't think I've posted here because I was between accounts.

A random memorial slab in the dead leaves on the path to the mill. In the background is the river overlooked by two very tall thin birches, then water meadows and the sunlit woods.

The top of the ruined mill, showing, well, a series of low stone walls and some heaps of slate overlooked by bare trees. In the background is the curve of the woods overlooking the valley, trees black against a sky full of sparse cloud tinted gold with the setting sun.

Here is a man-made channel leading to the river, its mossy stone wall curving around the path. On the other side is grass and step-shaped walls enclosing old stone buildings. Grey clouds scud across the evening sky, touched with orange light.

Well the Haute Vallee de la See people have finished building the bridge. There is a wooden one but it's very slippery when wet and I've fallen on my arse on it a few times

I also had a wander around the village of Le Gast. The church may be very plain on the outside, but a civic-minded homeowner has made sure at least one set of eyes is keeping watch over the place

The church may be unnerving, but the drive between Champ du Boult and Le Gast is my favourite in the area. It has been recently tarmacked and sweeps through pine woods and over high ground past that wonderful water tower I posted about. The road is bendy enough to be fun while allowing decent speed.

Right strap in, bitches, I refuse to be the only person here to have seen the inside of Le Gast church. All the windows are made of the same functional yellow frosted glass, casting that morning urine sample light on everything, though in my other snaps my cameraphone insisted on adding more light.

A grey stone font, maybe octagonal, with a pot of artificial flowers on its wooden lid, stands in front of an arched window of frosted yellow glass. Just in the window alcove is a figure of a holy man in a surplice etc.

Close-up of the holy man, lifting one hand in benediction. He has grey hair, a domed forehead, and what would probably be a kindly expression if he wasn't painted quite badly and doused in jaundiced light. Also the mould growing on the white blocks of the wall behind him doesnt help

J-boy, also made in naif painted plaster. He wears a golden loincloth and looks peaceful, though considerable enthusiasm has been expended on the gouts of blood on his forearms. The church walls here particularly remind one of some public temple of convenience

Look I don't know who this mitred figure is but they are in the most dark-yellow corner of the church and they look horrified and a bit horrifying. The hem of their raiment is very scuffed and the wall around them is blotched.

Perriers en Beauficel: the churchyard yew has gone a bit lopsided but is still admirable. Please note the Dalek on the left in pic 2, from the iron plunger era

The Evangeliaire de Mortain, a late 10th/11th c. manuscript. Sadly the touch-sensitive display in the unit encasing this was not working so I was unable to ascertain the nature of that weird little creature in the top right corner (pic 3) but I love love love the whole thing

A big old illuminated manuscript, apparently containing the gospels of Matthew, Mark and Luke, open to show on the left page a blue robed halowed figure framed in a very fancy border. On the right is the text "Initium evangelii Iesu Christi Filii Dei Sicut Scriptum Est Inesaia Propheta" (Here begins the Gospel of Jesus Christ Son of God As Written by the Prophet Isaiah) in blue red and green lettering with a great big gold initial I.

Below is a piece of paper covered in samples of all the inks used to make it, and behind is another open book, which looks older and more worn, and is open to show foliage and some kind of fruit running around the edge of the page.

Not very good close up of the palette piece of paper. It was amazing in real life, showing all the fancy substances used to do the pictures, like Azurite and Paris Yellow and Malachite and so on

I wrote a collection of short horror stories inspired by mid-20th century radio and television like One Step Beyond and Quiet, Please! Come for the classic influences, stay for the cosmic justice, exploding body parts, ghostly revenge, cannibalism, and grave robbing. Clever people say it’s great!

The seating at Champcey church is a bit Barchester Cathedral and I sat in that chair for a bit pretending I was Dr Haynes getting blackmailed by a hot housemaid and feeling wood of dubious provenance come to life beneath my clammy palms #MRJames

A hard armchair sort of built in to the wooden panneling behind it along one wall of the church, notable for its two arm rests with have the heads of dogs

Another sulk on the beach at St Jean de Thomas. The tree in pic 1 is not going to point upwards sensibly and you can't make it

A couple of scrubby trees in long dry coastal grass, one of them a very silly pin with a straight trunk, but then all its boughs fanning out like an umbrella, then a quite long stretch of bare trunk ending in nothing. The other is lower and rounder and just sort of lurking.

A long collapsing line of grey wooden fenceposts, parting on a big pile of sticks.

More fence, this time leading away to the beach and sea.

This is the old paper mill near the house, built in 1907 and restored in the 90s. In bored moments I enjoy watching the water reflected off that glass ceiling in pic 4, as if the whole building up there was filled with water #IndustrialHistory #Mills

The mill, with its tall chimney for expelling the fumes of the "machine a vapeur", and long stone main section, part of which was converted into an inn.

Mill seen from round the side, with a brick section of modern appearance featuring an array of glass windows running up the whole height of one section of the building, with the chimney looming over it and a few trees in the background.

The base of the chimney: the first third is grey stone and cement, the rest red brick with white lime or something. It is surrounded by rust-coloured (but not rusty!) metal ties at three places.

The actual mill wheel round the other side, with a section beside it where water cascades freely into a stone channel. This is reflected in the ceiling of the wheel house, which is partly made of glass panels.

My favourite Max Ingrand windows from the eglise Saint-Martin at Sourdeval #StainedGlassSunday

A small slender arched window featuring a stag and a bunch of blue and white and red fabrics around a cross, framed in gold and green panes nested in another frame of paler grey, blue and green panes.

Similar size and shape of window, this time showing a flaming golden triangular with just belo wit a downward plummeting dove, then bolts and bolts of coloured silks and a scroll saying "je te baptise au nom du pere" (I baptise you in the name of the father), again framed in green and golf panes, with another lighter frame around it of grey, gold and blue.
