Checking back in on my favorite log. It’s also a favorite of Fomitopsis quercina. This year something different ; Ganoderma brownii has joined the party! #fungifriends
Log that is covered with brackets on both sides of Fomitopsis quercina. Thos was taken in early September in the Willamette Valley Oregon Ganoderma brownii. Larger brackets on the same log that are much darker and covered with brown spores from the older brackets above.

This is the same log we visited in December when most of the bracts were covered in leaves; now it’s early summer and there’s lots of signs of new growth for Fomitopsis quercina. #fungifriends #fungifriday
It’s difficult to convey how massive this log is that is in the process of being broken down by Fomitopsis quercinaView of side of log showing new growth on old bracts and a new bract forming. Saying good night to my BlueSky friends with this incredible sight. On June 31, a rare 22-degree solar halo appeared above Devils Tower in Wyoming. The ring formed as sunlight passed through millions of tiny hexagonal ice crystals, creating one of nature's most beautiful optical displays.

A hard rain a couple of days ago brought out the mulch maids today in force! Too bad they are not edible, but they sure were fun to see after this long dry spell we were having. #fungifriends
Tan mulch maid mushrooms make a dramatic reappearance after an early summer rain. There were hundreds!Pretty mulch maids all in a row! Hundreds! They were everywhere! Close up of mulch maids growing on… mulch naturally :)

It’s “galling “ when you think you’ve spotted a puffball! … but upon closer inspection, it’s an oak gall. Not the first time I’ve fallen for this lookalike. #fungifriends
Round white object on grass. Is it a puffball?Looking closer, there’s some brown staining and an unusual texture. Let’s roll it over and… Damn. It’s an oak gall!

Possibly Xanthoria parietina “common sunburst lichen” on side of tree. I noticed the color from a distance, but the detail up close is amazing. I’m sad that I must overlook thousands of beautiful views like this one in the course of a week, but happy that I didn’t miss this one. #fungifriends

What is it? Trametes betulina, known as the gilled polypore (A new species for me). What is that on it? No clue. Seen on a walk today in the PNW. Anybody? #fungifriends
Tan polypore hidden in the moss has gills and there are white curly strands all over it.

We Need Each Other This is a “living stump.” The tree has been cut down, but instead of dying, it has healed and lives on thanks to the help of its neighbors from whom it is getting nourishment due to direct root grafts and/or mycorrhizal networks.

Perhaps a different kind of #gardening but a couple years ago I dedicated a planting bed and several grow bags to growing wine cap mushrooms and it’s been an overwhelming success. So much so that in season, spring and fall, I’m able to treat my #FungiFriends to fresh mushrooms!
Wine caps coming up in hardwood chips in a grow bagThe first wine caps of spring! Growing in a three layer bed of dirt , chips, and topped with straw. These almost got away from me before I found them. I usually harvest them as buttons

The argonaut has a spiral "shell" (actually an egg case) that is it wearing, and its mantle is in the egg case, and its arms are reaching back into the "shell." The shell has a wavy series of edges. The parts of the arms that are exposed have their suckers sticking out. Its mantle is sticking out on the left side. The argonaut has round silvery eyes, its body is white with purple chromatophores, and a beige shell. The jellyfish is clear and has frilly edges. The background is dark.

I have never ever EVER found so many mica caps, Coprinellus micaceus in one place. It was too bad it was in a nature park and I had to walk away with just pictures. They are one of my favorites to eat!
An amazing abundance of mica caps growing at the back of a dead tree. I couldn’t get them all in one shot! There were even more little sparking golden caps bursting out of the of the ground. There were so many, it dislodged a clump of earth.Another closeup of the mica caps growing out of the ground next to the dead tree stump.
