I don't think ATProto is good enough for these kinds of applications considering relays are too big and nonspecific. They're great for Bluesky and more parasocial media, but I don't see how it can be useful outside profiles, settings, sign in, and message history. I think this could be interesting.

seeing as polyproto.org isn't ATProto and they're making the homeserver mistake, I have been considering working on some kind of standard extension on top of ATProto for instant messages and reactions, maybe using some kind of temporary websocket server per chat room / guild.

yeah that's certainly something I've seen echoed online, but once you begin moving away from Bluesky and Fedi, people are more open to nuance. There's something about Twitter-likes that attract or fuel a lack of nuance.

AT Protocol itself is fine honestly. You really don't have to interact with Bluesky in AT Protocol, and the people working on it don't seem related to any of the drama going on there.
