Row of copies of Humans: A Monstrous History, a red hardback with yellow lettering visible on the spine. One copy in the centre faces outwards. The red cover shows an oval, silver-coloured mirror with a black frame comprised of sci-fi and fantasy monsters, with "Humans" in yellow lettering in a stylized font with details that resemble whale-tails and bats’ wings at the top, curving around the mirror. Just inside the top curve is the subtitle: A Monstrous History. Along the bottom curve of the mirror: Surekha Davies.Book on book chair open to first page of Introduction. Opening lines: “I spent my childhood watching too much Star Trek and have been searching for monsters and aliens ever since. They led me through grad school. They sustained me through adventures on the road: being locked into a vault in the Vatican Library and balancing on a ladder in a Parisian basement while wrangling giant maps and directing the beam of a hot lamp, trying not to burn anything. A comic of two foxes, one of whom is blue, the other is green. In this one, Blue and Green are pressed together, cuddled up and simply enjoying each others' company, eyes peacefully closed.
Green: You know what's the best part of the holidays?
Blue: What is it?
Green: All our problems are next year's problems. All can wait until January.

While Blue's expression remains peaceful, Green opens his eyes in realisation to his words.
Blue: Except for that thing in the sink.

Both of the foxes turn to look at something coming in from outside of the comic panel, with slimy tentacle-like tendrils reaching towards them.
Green: Oh right. We should probably do something about that.

Screenshot of an article title page. 'An invitation to a party? Staging urban proximity and the colonial public in nineteenth-century Batavia' by Mikko Toivanen. Abstract: This article examines the development of colonial public culture in Batavia, the capital of the Dutch East Indies, over the second half of the nineteenth century, focusing on two moments of extended colonial ceremony: the city’s 250th anniversary in 1869 and the inauguration of Queen Wilhelmina in 1898. The analysis shows that over the course of the century, colonial ceremonial increasingly sought to assimilate facets of local cultural practices, while also expanding spatially into a more diverse set of neighbourhoods. Nevertheless, this new and superficially more representative order still maintained a strict internal hierarchy embedded in spatial and socio-cultural boundaries.

Link in tweet.
