I was in med school. Fourth year. Top of my cohort. My name was Nora. I was going to be a surgeon. Then I submitted a fantasy to GILT. Once.
There was this nurse on my rotation: tight uniform, perfect makeup, every man – the residents, the paramedics, the patients – tripping over themselves to help her. I had the degree, the discipline, the plan… but she had them wanting. I was invisible.
I typed in “I want to be simple and sexy. Like the nurse they can’t stop staring at.”
It’s just a website. I thought it was harmless.
Now? My ID says Amber Leigh, my Instagram is full of selfies in pink scrubs I don’t remember taking. My voice got soft. I giggle. I fuck. A lot.
I’ve stopped caring about money, politics, the news. About being right. About people I love. I don’t know my own brain. My own emotions.
Everyone acts like I was always Amber! Professors, old friends, classmates, even my mom. It’s like the world, idk, rebooted around my fantasy, erasing the girl I was. Even as I type this I feel her creeping in. Nora would never type ‘idk’.

It was a poet’s job to seek out beauty, to be mesmerised by it. Darshil wanted to transform Rowan into swirls of ink, to fit his hands into the slight dips where Rowan’s waist met his hips and write him a thousand times over.

The only thing more fascinating than death was the tormented living it left behind.
It helped to hate him. It was less painful than loving him.
The dead thing woke to the acrid stench of its own rot.
Rowan matched him tenderness for tenderness, giving everything he could and knowing that for once, his everything was enough.
Perhaps closing his eyes stopped it meaning anything. Darshil knew he should do the same. This was shame beyond anything else, a secret to take to the unloving grave.
He kept his eyes open anyway. With Rowan beneath him, as beautiful as the dawn, he couldn’t bear to look away.

I remember looking up to say “Thank you,” and tripping over the words when my eyes connected with the amused curiosity in her own chocolate brown ones. “You’re so pretty,” I blurted instead, surprising us both.
She blinked a few times. A low rasp of a laugh escaped her.
“Or maybe—sorry—not pretty.” It was too feminine a word. She radiated a sort of confident androgyny and… “symmetry…you’re face is so symmetrical,” I corrected for some reason, zeroing in on the perfectly centered dip in her lower lip.
She smiled with that lip then and it took up her whole face, making her more radiant, more dumbfounding. “Thanks, kid,” she said.
It was important that I correct her immediately. I was not a kid. I was 19 years old, my life nearly a quarter of the way over, and my name was Esther.

I push out against the hardness in front of me. It resists, but only for a few moments. Cracking and crunching noises fill my senses where only the beats were. I push harder. It fights me, but i cannot stop.
Cracks appear in front of me and… whatever it is i’m in is breached. Light and air flood over me and i gasp, drawing in lungfuls of air to sate the burning.
Thu-dump! Thu-dump!
My heart calms now that i have air, but it still beats rapidly. I still have to get out, i am in danger here! Get out and get up!
How do i know all this?
I push again, harder now that i’m breathing again. The cracks widen… and then i’m falling forward out of a large tear. My whole world tumbles, and then i’m half laying on a cold, rough, dirty floor, half hanging out of my vacated prison. I draw in another breath and start coughing, expelling dark liquid out of my lungs, but i am breathing fully and properly now.
