Perhaps relevant, but here's a piece I wrote earlier this year about the long history of fear and joy around some foods' supposed ability to queer the body. Both of which are rooted in the knowledge that the body, and the self, can indeed be changed. www.eater.com/24162871/foo...

The Food That Makes You Gay
Too many people grow up fearing what food might reveal about themselves. Maybe it’s time we embrace self-discovery.

We’re also working on a version of this course with no programming, for those that just want to explore ethics in tech at a starter level with their students. Bonus is that it helps incoming undergrads develop a literacy and critical reflectiveness about interaction and information online!

A two-paneled image shows an outdoor, lettered bulletin board. The first panel shows the board’s actual message which reads: “Why is narcan free to a dope addict but my insulin is $750 a month”

The second panel shows the same sign with part scratched out to read: “Why is…my insuling $750 a month”

information/entertainment skills are so different now to 20 years ago. like food pre/post industrialisation of the food supply. the skill used to be: finding & storing so that you had enough. now it’s often: selecting from a vast selection that contains a lot of junk. & knowing when to stop.

So it is with a great deal of sadness that I will be spending the next month packing up my life here and saying goodbye to the friends and places I've called home. At the end of February I move to Louisville, where I'll live with my cousin and his family until I can set up my own home in Kentucky.

There are various options for retraining or transferring my skills into other sectors, but that sort of transition is difficult to execute on a work visa in a country that's currently working hard to discourage immigration.

I built a life here and had every intention of staying indefinitely, but the last three years have seen the slow, tragic death of my academic hopes. It's a fate shared by so many who finished PhDs in humanities fields during the pandemic, which changed the game on us in so many ways.

It would be nice to join in on the listing of 10 authors, 5 books, but I can't do it. I dunno if it's ADHD or being an ex-academic who pulls more from articles and surveys than books, but I've only got Dostoevsky, Pratchett, Louisa May Alcott. Shakespeare if we count plays. 🤷

Reminds me of music class in school being told that Beethoven preferred ‘40-bean coffee’ and we all goggled appropriately despite having no idea of that was meant to be impressively strong or tragically weak. Once I counted out and weighed 40 beans & my aeropress cried. ❤️‍🩹

I #amwriting and #amreading, finding wisdom in Salman Rushdie’s choice of door knocker. Read more here: substack.com/@susannotess...
…for writers, there’s no escape from the fellow. (I myself have a brass door knocker in the shape of a bust of Shakespeare on my study door, so that every day when I go in to work, I can knock on my door and tell myself to come in and know that I’m entering not my domain but his, Shakespeare’s, whom no door knocker can limit or contain, who leaps off the door knocker and takes possession of the room behind the door, ruling it as he rules all the rooms in literature’s poor, rich house.)’
