Another morning writing with @sofiawithaphd.bsky.social that was very productive, if short. Early morning continues to work for my scattered brain. Write before our brains say no! #acwrimoments

One difficult thing about writing about receipt books is that there are so many interesting recipes I wish I could try. What if that weird recipe DOES help my migraines? The recipe was recorded and used for a reason, after all. I draw the line at using rabbit urine, though. #acwrimoments

Over a week after the end of the semester, three students made me a digital card together and sent it today. ❤️ A few days ago, a student (that I had for three consecutive semesters!) sent me her review of Sunrise on the Reaping, which she read purely for enjoyment. I love teaching.

Starting a quick, fluffy read as a reward for (1) organizing a math-themed family costume (number line), (2) making dinner before taking the family to math-o-ween, and (3) submitting another job application. I deserve a treat.

I had students draw Dracula today based on the text description, and we had a lot of fun figuring out what his "long, white mustache" might look like. Apparently, most of my students' default referent for "vampire" is the dad from the movie Hotel Transylvania.

The #18thc enthusiasm for having useful information ready to hand knew no bounds. Here's a printed handkerchief that records around its edges the going rates in London for hackney cabs, hackney chairs, & Thames watermen, & the distances between principal cities in Britain. Who needs a smartphone?
Red and white handkerchief. Its borders are formed by illustrated vignettes of various themes involving 18th century transport. The rates for those forms of transport are given alongside the pictures.

Today the Board at St. Norbert College wrote to deny all applications for tenure and promotion. 4 of the 5 faculty still up for tenure were in the humanities, and 2 of the 5 were in my discipline of English, which means humanities has now lost 18 positions, and English has gone from 8 faculty to 3.

Pulitzer Prize Board acknowledges the "extraordinary real-time reporting" of student journalists covering campus protests. www.pulitzer.org/news/stateme...
As we gather to consider the nation’s finest and most courageous journalism, the Pulitzer Prize Board would like to recognize the tireless efforts of student journalists across our nation’s college campuses, who are covering protests and unrest in the face of great personal and academic risk. We would also like to acknowledge the extraordinary real-time reporting of student journalists at Columbia University, where the Pulitzer Prizes are housed, as the New York Police Department was called onto campus on Tuesday night. In the spirit of press freedom, these students worked to document a major national news event under difficult and dangerous circumstances and at risk of arrest.
