Again: for Black Women, in particular, the ability to chose, a time and place to reproduce is a function of liberty. The most fundamental fact of enslavement was the Black Women had no control over their reproduction; in fact, their ability to reproduce was a key source of other’s wealth.

Scoop: At a secret meeting this summer, an aide to Stephen Miller laid out Trump administration's plan to make it easier for states to round up and institutionalize mentally ill homeless people — by pushing a drastic policy change that would weaken the rights of millions of disabled Americans.

How Trump’s homelessness crackdown became a sweeping retreat from disability rights
After issuing a memo making it easier to institutionalize homeless people, the Justice Department began abandoning cases protecting disabled people’s right to live in the community.

I keep thinking we're overworked, under educated, lack the maturity in first principles as a society to make sound voting decisions. no easy way to 'fix' this except to embark on a long term vision of how society should operate and step towards that goal. really dumb species most of the time.

Thank you for your perspective. Perhaps it could be also argued that historically it's been out of step and is a major barrier to progress?

I think there is something deeper than her. Something in the DNA of this country... Snake oil, con men, a certain state's defacto religion, etc. Can't remember if it was Sagan or Asimov who warned about the perils of the strain of anti-intellectualism running through the country.

Here’s Chris Rufo and his podcast co-host addressing “the Indian question,” a reference to “the Jewish question.” That question was whether Jews could be incorporated into European society, and the Nazis were the ones who claimed to have developed the “final solution” to that “problem.”

Thank you for this thread. Makes me think that a lot of this is due to how our lives are very much being atomized and constantly steered towards separation vs community. Competition vs collaboration. What ails the social fabric? Lots of things!

My recommendation is no more affluent people. Or at worst limit the maximum wealth they can accumulate to limit the level of affluence. Net net turn every job into a public sector job. Max tier the crap out of their pay. All of our jobs should be in service to each other!

You would think we would look at global systems and pull in operating principles that lead to outcomes that are beneficial for students. But nope, instead we get funding ties to test scores, funding ties to where you live, shortage of teachers, the profession looked at snidely by elites, etc.

People like to point at the xkcd comic with the block tower held up by a tiny project maintained by one guy but I actually think this one explains far more about the state of digital infrastructure
Xkcd “Voting Software”

ASKING AIRCRAFT DESIGNERS ABOUT AIRPLANE SAFETY: “NOTHING IS EVER FOOLPROOF, BUT MODERN AIRLINERS ARE INCREDIBLY RESILIENT. FLYING IS THE SAFEST WAY TO TRAVEL.”

ASKING BUILDING ENGINEERS
ABOUT ELEVATOR SAFETY: “ELEVATORS ARE PROTECTED BY MULTIPLE TRIED-AND-TESTED FAILSAFE MECHANISMS. THEY'RE NEARLY INCAPABLE OF FALLING.”

ASKING SOFTWARE ENGINEERS ABOUT COMPUTERIZED VOTING: “THAT'S TERRIFYING.”

“WAIT, REALLY?”
“DON'T TRUST VOTING SOFTWARE AND DON'T LISTEN TO ANYONE WHO TELLS YOU IT'S SAFE.”
“WHY?”
“I DON'T QUITE KNOW HOW TO PUT THIS, BUT OUR ENTRE FIELD IS BAD AT WHAT WE DO, AND IF YOU RELY ON US, EVERYONE WILL DIE.”

“THEY SAY THEY'VE FIXED IT WITH SOMETHING CALLED ‘BLOCKCHAIN.’”
“AAAAA!!!”
“WHATEVER THEY SOLD YOU, DON'T TOUCH IT.”
“BURY IT IN THE DESERT.”
“WEAR GLOVES.”

Cheating really sours your perception especially more so if it's your team doing it. I've never been able to look at the Astros the same way & shocked at the lack of reparations. Then again it's the American/human way - sweep things under the rug for some other mythical greater good.

worth tying this into the political economy of the slave south as well. from roughly the 1820s onwards, slavery became enormously lucrative in ways that had never been seen before. slave traders became millionaires. large planters had tremendous purchasing power. just huge amounts of wealth.

This is pretty fucking wild. I had assumed in a worst case scenario he would target blue zip codes and toss ballots based on technicalities but this is even worse than I imagined.
Not only is this system astonishingly untested, USPS has simultaneously implemented an
impracticable zero percent failure rate.
13 When ballots are submitted to USPS in large-volume
batches, if any one ballot in the batch cannot be verified against the Portal, all ballots in that
batch will be rejected. For example, if a state election official brings a batch of 10,000 ballots to
USPS and USPS is unable to match just one of those ballots against the Portal – because, for
example, someone has recently changed their name after marriage or they’ve moved – then
USPS would refuse to mail the remaining 9,999 ballots as well. As the whistleblower notes,
