I love Zach Ertz the player, and hope this works out, but he will be 36 in November. Julio Jones was a 33 year old Eagle and didn't exactly light it up.

Old and busted: You can't win a Super Bowl with Jalen Hurts at QB. New hotness: You can't win a Super Bowl with Cam Jurgens at C.

It's so great to have football back. I pay attention to other things that are important to me, which is why I love and pay attention to football. Ars gratia artis.

The last 30 Super Bowls were won by 13 franchises. The Cowboys, Niners and WASteam are not in this club. Must be awful to be a fan of such losers.

Christian McCaffrey had 450 touches last year. In both prior seasons where he had more than 400 touches, he missed 13 games in the ensuing season. Those ensuing seasons occurred when he was 24 and 28. He is now 30 years old. Kyle Shanahan loves load mismanagement.

Some sportswriters treat their readership with contempt, as if they are idiots; others write for a discerning, intelligent audience. Both are correct! Readership is self-fulfilling.

This is excellent, not reliant upon pseudoscience, and consistent with the vast empirical literature on load management: the Niners over-practice, over-train and their injury results are a consequence of that stupidity.

I don’t do film study; I have no comparative advantage, no alpha. I rely on somebody who does: Fran Duffy. And, boy, Fran was as skeptical as I can remember him ever being, regarding the Eli Stowers pick.

Really enjoyed this episode wherein 2 of the smartest (genuine, not snark) football commentators praise a head coach who eschews modern load management / sports science as well as fourth down analytics. Model endogeneity is underappreciated.

“Best player available” is inexorably theory-laden. Implicit therein is positional value.

Sunset Shazz @sunsetshazz.bsky.social · 24/04/2026
Picking at 20, the Eagles chose A) a player who had fallen vs. consensus (falling 7 spots from 13th in GrindingTheMocks) and B) a top tier position in terms of value. I don't know anything about the player, except that he gives a great interview. But A and B above indicate sound process.

Using market-derived positional value, the highest paid positions are: Tier of its own: QB Tier 2: Edge & WR Tier 3: OT & CB The rookie wage scale is fixed. To maximize your odds of achieving surplus value in the first round (especially in the top 3/4 of the round), focus on those positions.

The NFL equivalent of “money illusion” is anchoring on nominal dollars in a world where the salary cap has been increasing at 85th percentile rates of change. It compounds quickly - at the post-COVID rate, it doubles every 7.5 years.

Since 1994, the average annual salary cap growth has been 7.0%. Assuming 2026 is in the middle of the quoted range, it would represent 8.7% growth, which is a 75th percentile increase over the past 32 years.

Dan McQuade wrote in a singular, Philadelphia-inflected voice. He brought prolific energy to the beat (posting a dozen times a day at PhilyMag). He had a deep understanding of the Philadelphia sports fan because he was one of us. What a tremendous loss. Gutted for his family, for his 2 year old. 💔

The Niners are investigating wacky, pseudoscientific nonsense, when the answer to their injury issues is prosaic: their player usage, practice and training camps all ignore modern soft tissue injury-preventing load management techniques. It’s that simple. What an unbelievably stupid org.

Even setting declining roster quality aside, the issue many of us have had with the offense for years is it feels like by using a vanilla system, they're underperforming their talent. It seems clear to me that they need someone to think creatively to maximize the talent that is actually on the team.
