actually i needed to transfer more of their lore from tumblr. i cannot stress enough how Thematic and Unhinged they would be ;o;

solas is wandering around in his Depression Era Year of trying to not think about felassan, thinking the world is full of tranquil, and getting shot at by the dalish occasionally. he finds anders, equally miserable, lying face-down in a ditch out of guilt from kirkwall. hawke had told him to fuck off after the chantry explosion, and now the mage rebellion doesn't seem to be going very well either.

solas, projecting wildly, picks him back up and says: "get it together. if you want a better world you have to take whatever measures necessary, own the consequences, and keep going regardless of your feelings. you don't need 'friends' if you know what you're doing is good for your people in the long run. are you a revolutionary or a flop?" and then gives anders a 6 hour ted talk on insurgency tactics out of reflex. bc he automatically defaults to "training demoralized new elf rebellion recruit" mode. then he returns to his quest and nearly forgets about the entire encounter.

anders, Inspired, and feeling a bit better about himself after this, thinks "that elf was RIGHT. i need to keep going and do what needs to be done. i'm going to kill the divine. the mages WILL be free from the chantry."

and then he uh. wakes up in a cell and they're telling him he blew up the entire conclave instead and created a huge hole in the veil? he wasn't trying to do that! and then he goes to close the first rift, and the Insurgency Tactics Elf is there. and varric also. he's having one of the worse days in his life.

anyway consider:

solas meeting an embodiment of justice that actually cares about people, and does stuff like "works for 7 years in a free clinic helping the poor" and "blows up theocratic institution to start a rebellion, fully expecting to die in the process". after his eons and eons of fighting losing battles in arlathan, eking out increasingly pyrrhic victories in the hopes of a better future, and finally waking up alone into this grim, doomed, blight-riddled and magic-less world... he sees someone who has the same type of earnest firebrand energy he had and then lost thousands of years ago. and this guy is a fucking human grey warden of all things.

anders meeting someone who's clearly a kindred spirit (ahaha). understands how to interact with him and justice in a way that's effortless, even when it's scary or difficult for other people to deal with. has these strange but compelling ideas on magic and spirits and personhood, and argues for them without hesitation. zero chantry ideology or ingrained fear of templars whatsoever. has somewhat bizarre views on elves but will argue for them just as confidently. does stuff like "wander off to help random refugees" without seeming to even think about it. has extremely specific and helpful insurgency tactics ted talks, but seems embittered about things, is utterly isolated even from other elves, and cagey about his past, in a way which suggests something went really badly for him.

and then they kiss -

pov: you're anders, wandering around miserably and aimlessly after kicking off a mage rebellion that is not going so well. and all your friends disowned and hate you now. and in the midst of your regular nightmares about kirkwall burning, this random elf(?) spirit(?) pops up to give you a curt yet comprehensive 4 hour lecture on insurgency tactics. and then tells you to get to work and stop whining if you think your cause is worth it. which is, somehow, the nicest thing anyone has said to you in years.

pov: you're solas, wandering around miserably after killing your last living friend on earth, and then getting shot at by the last descendants of your people. and you run into this guilt-ridden nightmare in the fade, that reminds you of how you're feeling currently. despite being from this half-sentient human. and so you give yourself (and the human, since he's there too) a pep talk to keep going. it's not like you need friends or happiness, if your cause is necessary to save your people, right.
