In what may be one of Earth’s craziest forms of mimicry, researchers in 2023 reported a species of rove beetle that grows a termite puppet on its back to fool real termites into feeding it. Learn more on #NationalWildlifeDay: scim.ag/4mM2aS9

Austrospirachtha carrijoi, a species of rove beetle, with text that says: Beetle grows ‘termite’ on back to steal food.

A messy sketch of Transformers: Animated Bumblebee sitting atop Waspinator's shoulders, both looking off canvas at an unseen threath, tense and anxious, prepared for a fight.

Bumblebee laying on its back with Waspinator resting his helm on its torso, his arms wrapped around it; Bee appears exhausted, hand on Wasp's helm, while Waspinator looks to be in pain. One of Waspinator's wings is completely shredded.

The tubing on my SS Shockwave wouldn't connect into the arm port and I don't want to glue it in. So it just dangles there and it's really annoying. Plus it looks wrong not having it plugged in. B127 took it for him. Unintentional shockbee but Shockwave barely tolerates it. Barely.

NEW PAPER, JUST OUT! 👀 Insects from the '70s and '80s were already collecting microplastic, decades before the term microplastic even existed. 🤯 A thread on the surprising history of this pollutant and the incredible insect larvae that helped us uncover it. 🐛 Let's dive in! 🧵👇 1/x

Together with student Isabel van der Velden we started working our way through the collection. And YES we found microplastic... 😱 (This is now her first scientific publication! Congrats Isabel!! 🥳) Everyone can read it as the story is fully #openaccess ✅ www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti... 8/x

If even bird-repellent sharp spikes are used as nesting material, apparently anything can end up in a bird's nest these days. It doesn’t get any crazier than this, does it? 😅 If you are interested, you can read the whole publication here: shorturl.at/ut7hi [fully open access] 🪹

A Tufted Titmouse on an ice covered branch. Birds do get cold feet; this time of year bird feet can be just warm enough to avoid frostbite. There's little risk of damage from the cold as bird feet are mostly tendon and bone, instead of muscle and tissue which is susceptible to frostbite.
