I ended up having more extended thoughts on Dolly Parton over on Facebook and I thought I would share them here as well.
When I was much younger, I knew her mostly as a caricature and the object of jokes, because young men are kind of stupid that way and I was no exception, and because she willingly played along with the joke, in part because she knew it would happen anyway, and this way she got to shape some of how that would play out for her, and use it for her own ends. It took me a while to realize how canny that was.

When I got older, I learned that underneath the caricature was a formidable songwriting and business mind. I had an inkling of what a rare combination that was in any person, but how even more rare it was for someone who was who she was, in the field and environment she worked in. Hidden in all those sparkles was a spine of steel.

When I got older than that I learned that in addition to a brilliant mind was a heart of kindness, which directed so much of the good fortune she amassed to herself right back out the door through philanthropic work, helping those in her communities, state and country, and which allowed to see the worth and dignity in those whom so many others treated (and still do treat) with contempt.

She was always all the things she was. What changed was my ability to see and understand who she was. I'm glad I was eventually smart enough to see it all.

cyclospora turns people into human shit geysers. Bobby Brainworms Jr killed the program that tracked it, because he was too fucking ignorant — and stupid — to understand the ramifications of what he was doing. thank you for your attention to today's extremely angry post. link is here: bit.ly/4hcewTt
awesome. Bobby Brainworms made an uninformed ad hoc decision based on zero data — because that’s how crackpots roll.

that’s the ethos of Donny’s entire administration: ‘I don’t have the intellectual capacity to understand why this is important, so let’s get rid of it.’

what could possibly go wrong, am I right?

this is the same mindset that led the Space Nazi’s merry band of pimply DOGE incels to run wild, gutting federal agency after agency.

‘we don’t know what the fuck this is, so get rid of it.’

and so now, a year later, we’re dealing the fallout. around the world, children of dying of malnutrition due to cuts to USAID — all because DOGE couldn’t be bothered to care.

and here in the good old US of A, people are turning into human shit-geysers because some whale-head-chainsawing dumbfuck couldn’t be bothered to spend five minutes learning why tracking cyclospora might come in handy someday.

When you see people cheering for this remember that Trump and his allied criminal network paid someone to create those accounts and try to convince you they should be allowed to kill you and your neighbours. It’s not just propaganda but their way of normalizing their crimes.

Here's the real reason Trump has to blame "vandals" for his immense failures with his national monument meddling, like the reflecting pool, which is actually peeling because he told them to pour H2O2 into it, which caused the new paint job to peel right up. Because he's a moron.

Trump said the repairs would cost $1.8 million. It ended up costing $14 million. The company doing the repairs got a no-bid contract that baked in a 20% profit margin. The typical federal construction contract profit margin is 6% to 12%. Where’s the uproar about waste, fraud, and abuse now?

Yup, right now. What we did (and what I encourage US writers to consider) is create an LLC, join the local Chamber of Commerce, and get our insurance at their group rate, which is a lot better than what we could get on our own. Having an LLC also offers other benefits, like a liability shield.
