Learning that 1917 (2019) was an inspiration for Resident Evil (2026)'s design, and that makes so much sense.

Earlier this year, I stated that I was working on something comprehensive about CAMP MIASMA. This is a video essay on the history of trans psycho killers and how CAMP MIASMA uses that history for subversion and reclamation. I hope you enjoy it. mubi.com/en/program-n...

Wrestling is special. Only a community like this can band together in moments of absolute darkness, put on a show that illustrates why you love this artform so much, and make you see the light.

This sort of only happens in wrestling. The equivalent of a funeral episode for a performer. This tradition of grief. They're often beautiful, and they help everyone collectively grieve, and celebrate. It helps in moving on, but I'd rather never have to watch one of these ever again.

The press doesnt have an obligation to "be fair," it has an obligation to report the truth. If you find the truth unfair thats on you.

As someone who loves film, this whole narrative that "there are no good guys or bad guys anymore, moral relativism is killing modern cinema" pisses me off because of how ahistorical it is. 1970s cinema was practically defined by antiheroes. 50 fucking years ago! Half a century ago! 🤷

What if it turns out that we’re under attack by extra terrestrial satirists and the only way to protect us is to make this country so stupid that it can’t effectively be satirized? You ever think of that??? Huh???

It's not wven enough to wait for JKR to die. You need to make sure her rights and royalties don't end up in the possession of a trust or organization to continue perpetuating evil.

Yes, because every human being deserves healthcare, regardless of what sector(s) of society that they are said to belong to. Ideally, it should be in an inalienable right, like free speech, the right to vote, etc. No one should ever be denied it, for any reason.

I haven't liked a Refn film in quite a long time, but I loved HER PRIVATE HELL, and I tried to figure out why. The film is a fantasy of busted binaries, and characters whose sexuality, gender identity, kinks, and persona are in a state of symbolic impermanence. www.patreon.com/willowcately...
a still image of Sophie Thatcher in close-up in HER PRIVATE HELL. She is draped in heavy pink-blue-purple bisexual lighting In Her Private Hell, Sophie Thatcher plays an actress and model named Elle, and her character is unusually fixated on her leather-clad father Johnny Thunders (Dougray Scott). She puts her arms around more than just her memories of her patriarch, and Freudian motifs-in-the-form-of-genre-pastiche examine the liminal undercarriage of a woman whose identity is less than concrete. Echoes of a prowling leather-man emanate from the fairy-tale mythology of the pink mist in the high-rise city. Tales of a strong, handsome phantom, in search of his lost daughter, is the favorite rumor of Elle, and her sorority of impossibly beautiful, and dead-pan model friends. Refn can be tacky, and obscene, dull, and meaningless, but the provocations of Her Private Hell are sticky and inviting. Her Private Hell came to Refn after a near-death experience, and the borderline of life and death in this movie is alluringly suggestive. The glass-towers and crackling diamond-speckled city-scape is a purgatory in its own right, and Elle wanders in and out like a strobe-light of a person, with her influencer friends, and they wonder when the Leatherman might come to rescue them from their own malaise. I’ve been cool to Refn for quite a while, but I found myself on the wavelength here—more willing to see it for what it was—something so fake it felt real. A director friend of mine was at the Fantasia Film Festival screening and informed me that Refn claimed he made the movie as both and neither gender, and the plastic elastic women and the grimdark macho hunks that preside over this film are so performative that it felt familiar. Drag, a series of poses, where gender was hazy, and I was being asked where my gaze fit into the blurry mayhem of this erotic giallo wonderland.

“Die hard fan of book dislikes when an adaptation doesn’t match their own interpretation” is not the jaw dropper or pearl clutcher a lot of people are treating it as.

The truth is, I can’t really take The Odyssey seriously. It never once mentions Odysseus being a Dapper Dan man, and straying from the source material so wildly just kept me from being immersed in it.

GDQ fucks up and people are rightly upset. GDQ immediately apologizes, turns down the sponsorship and makes a commitment to do better, yet somehow some people are more pissed? Is the concept of mistakes and forgiveness lost of people? Fuck you. Most people responding positively, thankfully.

1/2: Spoilers for #AHistoryOfViolence, but the scene where Viggo says that he spent "three years becoming Tom Stall"... does anyone else feel that a movie about that process might've been better, rather than the one we got where he's already become him...

You know, my entire approach to people being shitty to me for no reason on social media is about to just shift to some variation of, “You should probably go deal with whatever makes you feel like such a POS that you have to act like this to prove it to yourself.”

Spoilers for #TheHuntForRedOctober, but it bears repeating that John McTiernan was such a good filmmaker in his prime, that he could make a potentially hokey/cliched scene like this be effective enough that even someone just half watching the moment would get sad about it: youtu.be/BJESLxEd0Tk?...

Every millionaire comedian is like “Look comedy is about confrontation, it’s about being taboo” and then scurry away to Riyadh for a payout they don’t need, and every actually funny comedian is like “queer folks rock, let’s all be silly together.”

I'm in the process of writing the final essay in my Twin Peaks series & it feels bittersweet that it's happening in the final days of the year that David Lynch passed away. The tone of this series changed in January. Each piece since then has been an outpouring of my love for him & his art.

SHUTTER ISLAND (Martin Scorsese, 2010) I don't think it's worthwhile to look for realism or answers in the scripted logic of SI, because the emotional truth keeps returning. It's about running into the shadows to get away from what you've seen & felt before. It's a Val Lewton technique.
a still image from Shutter Island of Leonardo DiCaprio's character cradling Michelle Williams's. She is crumbling to ash, and the ash is falling like snow all around them. He weeps. She's almost gone.
