Coming from a Colorado city where Main Street is literally a state highway which can’t be pedestrianized without support from the state, I envy how European cities can reinvent themselves to accommodate people

Tirana has emerged in recent years as the Balkans’ most ambitious cycling city. What began as a modest effort to introduce bike infrastructure has grown into a broader vision of child-friendly urbanism; combining hardware, software, and orgware into a wholistic strategy for reclaiming public space.🧵

Made my first Danish kransekage to ring in the new year. This marzipan cake includes just 4 ingredients. Vegan and gluten free!

I was humiliatingly forced to say prayers not of my faith in public school in the 60s until SCOTUS ruled it illegal and that's one reason I became a lawyer. There will always be prayers in school as long as there are math tests, but they should be personal and private, not required.

You might have heard of this company that wants to put giant reflectors in space to "light up" parts of the earth. It would be catastrophic not just for astronomers, but for...any people or creatures who thrive at night. Have comments? The American Astronomical Society would love to hear from you.

Today I happened to be around for the opening ceremony of the Four Days of the Yzer, a 4-day long-distance walk through Belgian coastal towns organised by the Belgian Defence Force, in remembrance of the victims of the World Wars.
Belgian military dignitaries in uniform bearing black-yellow-red flags and walking along a street in Oostduinkerke. There’s an apartment building and a traffic light in the background.

My least popular (and most correct) view is that cars should be automatically limited to the local speed limit. Put the pedal to the floor and you still can't go over 25mph in a residential area. (15 in Manhattan btw)

I object on aesthetic and maybe quasi-moral grounds to language like “devout” and “deeply religious” in this context. If his fanaticism adhered to a different faith, he’d get “fanatic,” “extremist,” “zealot” etc. Perverting the Cross to commit murder exempts you from “devout”

True! The LOBO trail is a slower but safer alternative that is probably not as well used as it should be because (unlike cycling trails in nearby communities like Fort Collins) the signage on the trail is woefully inadequate

Gentle reminder that the quaint European pedestrian streets filling your Instagram feed were very recently just as fucked up and full of cars as most American ones. But they did something about it.
