Stargazing vet from the Dark Satanic North. Once hit the stumps from the boundary aged 11, all down hill since then. Was in practice, now harping on about #OneHealth, transboundary infectious disease and whatnot 🇬🇧🇦🇺🇪🇺

Put it in the fridge just in case.

I don’t want to spoil but the latest episode has such a sitcom cliche that they practically drove a bus through it. As soon as there was baby talk you knew what the counterbalance had to be. I thought it was quite odd that this was the episode dedicated to Anthony Head.

He would have had quite a lot of input into that decision though - a fair gamble when they just needed to throw something at the wall to see what stuck.

I thought either a team was very on the ball or somewhere there’s an engineer saying ‘I f***ing told you that was going to happen’.

Somewhere there’s a smug engineer who knew what was going to happen and had start_procedure_v3-final_final-USETHISONE ready. #f1

If they’re on the ball they’ll kill Hall and allow Fry to help build the treasure chest before she’s naturally voted off for being too smart. But we are dealing with someone who said ‘I’m a traitor’ so 🤷‍♂️

The genius of Traitors is recognising that cynicism in TV and building the programme backwards around the round table edit - so a coherent narrative emerges without excessive direction. I’m as cynical as the next guy but that’s surely why it feels fresh.

I want my hat back (Jon Klassen) and The wonky donkey (Craig Smith) were always favourites.

Obligatory xkcd:
Average Familiarity, xkcd 2501:
“SILICATE CHEMISTRY IS SECOND NATURE TO US GEOCHEMISTS, SO IT'S EASY TO FORGET THAT THE AVERAGE PERSON PROBABLY ONLY KNOWS THE FORMULAS FOR OLIVINE AND ONE OR TWO FELDSPARS.”
“AND QUARTZ, OF COURSE.”
“OF COURSE.”

EVEN WHEN THEY'RE TRYING TO COMPENSATE FOR IT, EXPERTS IN ANYTHING WILDLY OVERESTIMATE THE AVERAGE PERSON'S FAMILIARITY WITH THEIR FIELD.

My MP @timrocamp.bsky.social does take notice of these things, though I agree a form letter is far too easy to ignore. I have sent the APPG email for the benefit of Mike’s stats, but will email separately too.

Given that you can get high from the meat-fumes just walking past Hawksmoor and if you can bring yourself to cross the threshold you’re surely part carnivore, I’m not convinced the veggie option exists anywhere other than in the chef’s imagination.

...and it strikes me that it is these people, not just the lifeboatmen in the story, that today's 'protesters', filled with hate and devoid of empathy, are most distant from. But we are the generation that village plaque speaks to across the years. And what we do next, matters.

It's not just that it was an epic battle against the elements, but that hundreds of ordinary people came together to make the rescue possible. Farmers, labourers, schoolteachers, children were not prepared to sit idly by as a ship foundered off their coast...

James @studiousbadger.eurosky.social · 18/09/2026
The RNLI are no strangers to such stories of heroism, sometimes epic successes, sometimes tragic failures. The crews today are every bit as selfless as those that went before them and the very least they deserve is our support and respect. But this story I have always loved for one simple reason.

In the village today a plaque stands "so that future generations may remember the bravery of coxswain Henry Freeman, and the lifeboatmen, and the dogged determination of the people of Whitby, Hawsker and Robin Hood's Bay".

Up hill & down dale 18 horses dragged at tow lines while locals worked to clear the snow from the opposite direction, a 500ft elevation. The lifeboat was launched just TWO HOURS after leaving Whitby. Persisting after a failed first attempt smashed its oars, the entire crew of the Visiter was saved.

James @studiousbadger.eurosky.social · 18/09/2026
A century earlier, on 18th Jan 1881 the 'Visiter' ran ashore off Robin Hood's Bay, North Yorkshire. No local boat could be launched due to the violence of the storm, so the Whitby lifeboat was brought OVERLAND 6 miles to the bay itself. Through 7ft snowdrifts 200 men cleared the way by hand.

Such a beautiful and picturesque line though. Can you imagine the uproar if that was proposed now? So much of the waste of HS2 has been in burying large stretches of it underground. It’s great to be able to appreciate our countryside from the comfort of a train.

My sympathy is very much with this resident. It’s easy to tar the place with easy labels but we mustn’t loose sight of the fact that the fascist fans for these flames are external, something we all need to fight before the cancer spreads further.

And later on in the hotel, the delightful turnaround after he’s told Vesper what to wear, and then finds a suit ready and waiting for him - “there are dinner jackets and dinner jackets. This is the latter.” “How… it’s tailored!” “I sized you up the moment we first met”.
020
James @studiousbadger.eurosky.social · 14/09/2026
Their chemistry fizzes in that scene - and Vesper is only introduced about an hour in to the film! “By the cut of your suit you went to Oxford or wherever, and naturally think human beings dress that way”… “Rolex?” “Omega”.
