#ResistanceRoots Dorothy Vaughan was born on this day in 1910 in Kansas City, Mo. She was a mathematician, human computer and computer programmer who became the first African American supervisor at NASA. Throughout her career, she fought for equal pay and advancements and promotions for women. /1
Dorothy Vaughan in 1971, the year she retired from NASA. Vaughan was a visionary pioneer for women in STEM and a foundational architect of the U.S. space program. She broke through the dual barriers of Jim Crow segregation and gender discrimination to alter the course of aerospace history. Her calculations and FORTRAN programming laid the groundwork for America’s early aerospace achievements. By becoming NACA’s first African American supervisor in 1949, Vaughan cracked open doors that had been firmly shut to women of color. She spent her tenure as Section Head fighting for equal pay, promotions and engineering assignments for both Black and white women across the agency. When electronic computers arrived, she taught herself FORTRAN and trained her staff, saving dozens of Black women from layoffs and transitioning them into high-tech careers. Vaughan stands today as a symbol of resilience, intellectual brilliance and the indispensable power of community.

Exhibition teaser! This is the prototype of a piece for my solo show at Coburg House, Edinburgh at the beginning of October. www.coburghouse.co.uk/exhibitions/... I'm working on a larger version with orange instead of grey for the show. #knittedunconformities #mathematicalknitting
Photo of a mannequin body in the corridor outside my studio. The mannequin is wearing a knitted pullover constructed from large cream and grey, right-angled triangles.

There are some plants on tables in the background one of which has spikey leaves sticking out around the mannequin's left shoulder.

Astrophotographer Adam (AJ) Smadi caught this image a few hours ago from Washington state. A thin crescent Moon, sunlight illuminating the rugged lunar surface. And 2,400 times farther away—and on the other side of the Sun—mighty Jupiter, and its moons Io (left) and Ganymede (right).
A crescent Moon seen during the day, arcing from upper left to lower right of the frame. At lower centre is the full disk of Jupiter; the small dots to its upper left and lower right and Io and Ganymede, respectively.

We don't deserve otters...
Description: A two-panel hybrid meme combining a simple black-and-white line drawing and a color photo shows a sad, wrinkled face in the top panel and then the same figure blushing at a cute otter in the bottom panel.

Text in the image:
Top panel: “The world is a cruel and unjust place.
There is no harmony in the universe. The only constant is suffering.”

Below between panels: “*minutes later*”

Bottom panel (next to the blushing figure and otter photo): “omg otters!”

I took part in a production of Titanic in the McEwan Hall in the late 70s. The Hall was the ship, unseated space the deck and seating the lifeboats. Actors played known passengers and mingled with the audience on deck uttering fragments of recorded speech from the hours before the sinking. 1/2

I agree it may well be too difficult too tease out significant results . However, it's also a good bit of awareness raising. There's also value in getting more knitters to think about their own gauge in this much detail whatever the results may show.

I saw this too and had similar thoughts. In terms of experiment design it's like a scoping study to find the best areas to investigate in the main research. In practical terms, more people are likely to take part if they can use what they have without buying anything new. Hope they get enough folk.
