It is the 30-year anniversary of the Chicago heat wave that claimed over 500 lives. 🧵 #chicagoheatwave #climatejustice
It has been 30 years since the Chicago heat wave that claimed over 500 lives.Chicago faced a heat wave in July 1995. Most of the 500+ deaths were elderly and/or poor.

Some ways to protect yourself & your neighbors:
find community buildings in your area that have AC
stay informed--we are much better at predicting heat waves like this now
reach out to the elderly and people with young children
In extreme heat, limit outdoor activity & drink lots of water!Sources:

July 16. 94F 100FThe impact of this devastating heat wave was not random. It disproportionately affected neighborhoods with fewer community buildings, worse infrastructure, and lesser sense of community.Recent cuts to NOAA will make natural disasters, like the 1995 Chicago heat wave, even more damaging. NOAA is a vital administration that provides accurate weather & climate information. They work to inform people of natural disasters & how to prepare for them.

🔥 Congress just issued a letter to EPA Admin Zeldin demanding an end to what they call “illegal retaliation” against the #EPA139 for signing the #DeclarationofDissent. These civil servants warned that EPA leadership was endangering public health, abuse of authority, & gross mismanagement. (1/2)
First page of a July 8, 2025 letter from the U.S. House Committee on Energy and Commerce to EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin. Signed by hundreds of EPA staff, the letter accuses Zeldin of undermining the EPA’s mission and abusing his office. It states that Zeldin’s actions have harmed communities, set back science, and damaged the agency’s culture. The letter condemns the retaliatory administrative leave placed on at least 139 signatories of a previous dissent letter and warns that these retaliatory acts may violate the Whistleblower Protection Act.

🧵 Nearly 400 emergency 911 calls in just 6 months. Pregnancy complications. Cardiac arrests. Seizures. Suicide attempts. Sexual assaults. This isn’t border security—it’s a human rights catastrophe unfolding in ICE detention. And these calls came from just 10 centers. The true number? Unimaginable.

People will be sicker and more people will die.Ending Climate Investments for Marginalized Communities (4). The communities most affected will have less resources needed to protect their communities from climate change.Cuts to Energy Efficiency (5). “All we know is that Administrator Lee Zeldin made the following statement to the Daily Caller:”
Below is a block quote attributed to Zeldin:
‘Unfortunately, a small number of employees signed onto a public letter, written as agency employees, using their official work title, that was riddled with misinformation regarding agency business.’
Below the quote, bold white and red text says:
“This was not just a public letter – it was emailed to him by employees at the EPA on Monday morning, and published after it was sent to him.”
In the bottom right corner, red italicized text reads “More on next page” with a red arrow pointing right.A continuation of the graphic with a black background and white and red text. The paragraph reads:

Moderna reported positive results from recent early-stage trials for their HsN1 vaccines. (1)This technology has been studied for decades. The vaccines are safe, effective, and life-saving. (2)
