Fine motor skills are important at any age. Over the weekend, I crocheted this alpha motor neuron innervating a muscle.☺️

Today at #Bernsteinconference is Anna Levina on intrinsic timescales of neural dynamics👏. Timescales can be estimated from any brain signals, spikes, local field potentials, rhythms(?). Longer time-scale dynamics is closer to the critical point, but sometimes having a shorter is useful behaviorally.

Today's highlight of the #Bernsteinconference is Richard Naud on learning. V. interesting!👏 1) bursting spiking can serve as a mechanism of learning, 2) errors are addressed by the neuron that should have been involved in the right choice and not by the neuron that was involved in the wrong choice.

But brain waves are unlike, The symmetry is lacking, The peak could be a pike And trough of shorter height. The variance is striking. The shape of our brain waves May be, in fact, significant, It indicates the states, The signal structure traits, The inputs, near and distant.

#brainrhymes When people think of waves, They think of sinusiod, That typically behaves In up and down phase, From moment it's deployed. The sine is free from flaws, Symmetrical and slick; Its peaks do look like troughs. It happens so because The math performs the trick.

The brain is growing from the ectoderm, a superficial layer of the embryo. Later in the development, ectoderm gives rise to the forebrain, midbrain, and hindbrain (brainstem+cerebellum). It turns out that part of the ectoderm that gives rise to the hindbrain has a different chromatin configuration.

😁 Thanks for asking! What I did for these simulations, and what I do for real data, is just filter broadband signal in low-frequency range (< 3 Hz for this case). In sumulations, it's evident that filtered in low-frequency signal is inverted copy of amplitude envelope (plots in the last row).

Some oscillations have an asymmetric shape (or non-zero mean). Their troughs are peakier than peaks (or the other way round). These oscillations, when modulated in amplitude (literally always), will have their modulation "copied" in the lower-frequency signal. Here's simulated example. #brainmovies

Cool study! You showed differences in both the offset and spectral slope. Offset and slope are estimated from the same spectrum and may be correlated. Did you try to separate the effects? For example, if the effects of the offset are regressed out, would the slope still be different?

Alina Studenova @studenova.bsky.social · 16/09/2026
Absolute beta power is different between patients with Parkinson's disease and healthy controls, but not periodic beta power. Turned out what is different between patients and controls is the aperiodic offset and slope. Nice!👏 Lesson from that: always plot the full spectra and actually look at it.

M\EEG signals are autocorrelated. Here, I cut the resting-state data into trials and correlated the "pre-stimulus" window with other windows, like correlating two ERPs across trials. High correlation persists for some time. Also, some participants have larger and longer autocorrelation. #brainmovies

Neurons are multifunctional and can play different "tunes". Brain waves emerge from neuronal activity but also orchestrate it. "Orchestration" is realized via ephaptic coupling. Thus, brain waves top-down control the spiking "orchestra". Cool!🤩 It's music to my ears🎶
