Evoked responses (ERP) can be generated via phase reset of ongoing oscillations. Here, simulated oscillatory phase is reset to 90° at t=0. When averaged over trials, incoherent oscillations cancel out, but consistent part persists. After all, ERP is just an event with phase consistency. #brainmovies

Fine motor skills are important at any age. Over the weekend, I crocheted this alpha motor neuron innervating a muscle.☺️

Today at #Bernsteinconference is Anna Levina on intrinsic timescales of neural dynamics👏. Timescales can be estimated from any brain signals, spikes, local field potentials, rhythms(?). Longer time-scale dynamics is closer to the critical point, but sometimes having a shorter is useful behaviorally.

Today's highlight of the #Bernsteinconference is Richard Naud on learning. V. interesting!👏 1) bursting spiking can serve as a mechanism of learning, 2) errors are addressed by the neuron that should have been involved in the right choice and not by the neuron that was involved in the wrong choice.

Second day of the workshop "Bridging the species divide: comparative approaches to study neural signatures" at #Bernsteinconference. Yesterday, we listened to talks about theta and alpha, today more alpha and gamma. Exciting!🎉

Some oscillations have an asymmetric shape (or non-zero mean). Their troughs are peakier than peaks (or the other way round). These oscillations, when modulated in amplitude (literally always), will have their modulation "copied" in the lower-frequency signal. Here's simulated example. #brainmovies

M\EEG signals are autocorrelated. Here, I cut the resting-state data into trials and correlated the "pre-stimulus" window with other windows, like correlating two ERPs across trials. High correlation persists for some time. Also, some participants have larger and longer autocorrelation. #brainmovies

The keynote of today at #BIOMAG2026 is Lucia Melloni on adversarial collaborations in consciousness research. Apart from stressing the need to test theories against each other, Lucia touched upon problems with methods; e.g., they got almost no results using connectivity measures in MEG. No surprise😑

The first keynote at #BIOMAG2026 is Fang Fang on visual learning. Impressive research using numerous neuroimaging techniques.👏 Indeed, it turns out that it's possible to learn to detect faint gratings and weak coherence in dot motion.

Common spatial patterns (CSP) filtering is used in many applications. In my lab, we use it to obtain a "cleaner" ERD. I made a short video on how I use CSP for alpha ERDs in self-paced movements (MEG data). I don't like it, though. It seems to me that CSP can conjure ERDs from the void. #brainmovies

So I took this blink thing seriously and decided to check a somatosensory stimulation dataset. And look, people do blink more before undetected trials. Oddly, they also blink more right after the stimulus that was felt. After that, they blink again at 2 s because of the prompt. Cool!🤩 #brainmovies

In near-threshold research, we determine individual detection threshold by testing a range of stimulus intensities and fitting a sigmoid (psychometric curve). Here, I simulated effect of the slope: it affects trial-by-trial consistency in detection and reliability of initial estimation. #brainmovies

Today's keynote at #OHBM2026 is Dr. Vitória Piai about language. Language is not my jam, but Dr. Piai addressed several common issues that I was able to relate.☺️ For instance, the abstraction problem: "no two instances of 'the same' biological mechanism are physically identical".🤔

A career advice at #OHBM2026 from Dr. Vince Calhoun. It seems to me that it is not just academy career advice but in general life advice.👍 Among other points: - paper is a progress report not a final monument - you are more than your last result - luck favors the prepared

Amazing keynote at #OHBM2026 by Dr. Nanthia Suthana "Mapping the Human Brain in Naturalistic Environments".😍 Theta bouts in invasive hippocampal recordings in humans. Proposed framework: theta bouts reflect internal search processes that occur when retrieving memory, especially under uncertainty.

It was widespread in the past, but even now some use just one EEG electrode in the sensor space for analysis. Here I plotted leadfield from C4 for different participants in the LEMON dataset. Heterogeneous🤔. Individual MRIs are used for the forward model, but the montage is standard. #brainmovies

Averaged-over-trials evoked responses (ERPs) also have frequency content. Here, I'm exploring P50 after somatosensory stimulation. I computed the power of the already averaged ERP (also known as "evoked power") using wavelets. P50 has frequency in the alpha-lower beta range. #brainmovies

I'm trying to make sense of spaces for source reconstruction (EEG or MEG) and brain anatomy (from MRI). In a way, I'm exploring possible sources of variance. Leadfield gain = column norm. Curvature = concave or convex. LGI = how folded the cortical area is. #brainmovies

Basic but may be missed. It is possible to detect differences in the amplitudes of evoked responses using a cluster-based permutation test, which is, in reality, just a difference in latency. Also interesting, of course, but could be interpreted in a different manner. #brainmovies

I tried invertmeeg with P50 EEG data. It was fun🤩! However, I cannot say I found the perfect method. Based on the topography, the activity should be from a tagential dipole. Based on previous findings, it should be in area 3b. But I got in the precentral gyrus or on the crown (~area 1). #brainmovies

Alpha event-related desynchronization occurs after every stimulus and before the movement. But what neurons do? Is that because of the stimulus, some neurons are recruited, and they leave the oscillatory regime? Or after the stimulus, neurons operate in a completely different fashion? #brainmovies

Evoked responses in individual participants rarely look like an average over all participants. Does it mean we should have collected more trials? And what if the average from one dataset doesn't look like the average from another dataset? Should we collect more participants? #brainmovies

The angle of the dipole obviously matters. If active dipoles in two conditions are slightly misaligned, a difference can be observed. However, this difference is not driven by differences in amplitudes, but only by differences in orientations. Here, I simulated such a scenario. #brainmovies

If oscillations are modulated in amplitude from trial to trial, and those oscillations have a non-zero mean, they "create" an evoked response. It is a baseline-shift mechanism for ERP/ERF generation. Here is a simulated example of how alpha oscillations may generate readiness potential. #brainmovies

I have been trying to simulate event-related alpha amplitude decrease with the Jansen-Rit model. Turns out adding external inhibitory input abolishes alpha. Pretty obvious. But how does it agree with more alpha = more inhibition? #brainmovies

I have been trying to understand how the depth of a "source" influences its topography. Here are short and exaggerated simulations of EEG data (no real dipoles in white matter). Note that each frame of the topography was z-scored. So the deeper, the more spread out? #brainmovies
