As long as the Tories are threatening to leave the ECHR, they aren’t a serious party. Consider it the ultimate red flag. Any party who’d take this entirely unnecessary and ruinous risk with our rights and our country’s security and wellbeing should never get its hands on power. (Letter, Times)
Value of the
ECHR
Sir, In dangerous times, serious countries do not retreat into splendid isolation. They build alliances, multiply their influence and strengthen institutions. Key among those is the 46-member Council of Europe, at its heart the European Convention on Human Rights. As former independent reviewers of terrorism legislation we have seen at close quarters that the ECHR is not just a human rights instrument. It is a national security asset. Terrorist networks, hostile states, organised crime gangs and people smugglers do not respect borders. Tackling them requires arrangements for the closest possible co-operation with our neighbours, including through joint investigations and police access to European passenger, fingerprint, DNA and vehicle data. These arrangements expressly depend on internationally agreed human rights standards, applied by a supranational court. We detect no political willingness to excuse the UK from compliance with standards to which the rest of Europe already subscribes. As authoritarian powers grow more aggressive and democratic institutions face mounting pressure, Britain should not be abandoning one of its greatest postwar achievements.
The question is not whether we can afford to remain within the ECHR. It is whether, in an increasingly perilous world, we can afford not to.

Brexit bears huge responsibility for the far right strutting about our political stage today. It endorsed racism and ignorance as “legitimate concerns” and it promoted politicians who lied and dissembled because they couldn’t tell voters they’d betrayed them. www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...
Brexit's other legacy, besides upending the old Labour-Tory duopoly, is not measurable in pounds or percentages but is just as real. It is visible in the coarsening and darkening of the national conversation, in the aggression and even hatred that, previously pushed to the margins, now loiter in the centre of the public square. This week the leader of the party that brought us Brexit warned of civil war.
It would be wrong to cast the referendum as the sole cause of this shift - Brexit was, in part, a symptom of the change - and we can all see the role social media and the likes of Elon Musk have played in degrading the discourse. But Brexit both accelerated and intensified that process.

“Reform has the most extreme policy on energy and climate the UK has seen since modern science on the subject began. The party opposes solar; it opposes wind; it opposes batteries… Once again: Reform is largely funded by fossil fuels” Private Eye on the anti-thought, pro-corruption threat of Reform
MELTING TICE

RICHARD TICE, Reform
UK's deputy leader and spokesman on energy and climate, made an extraordinary appearance on Bloomberg's Zero podcast last week. A few things soon became clear: firstly, he hasn't read the science.

Tice claims the UK. is "almost
unilaterally" beggaring itself by choosing low-carbon power (tell that to China, building hundreds of gigawatts of solar and wind each year). He hasn't read the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change's (IPCC) summary for policymakers. He says "thousands" of scientists disagree with accepted climate science but wouldn't - couldn't? - name any scientists who'd advised him.

He thinks net zero will bankrupt Britain (jobs in clean energy are growing faster than much of the rest of the economy). He threatened to walk out twice - once when presented with the IPCC's summary. When asked about batteries, which store solar and wind power safely and cheaply until the evening peak, he said: "We don't need batteries. It's ridiculous."

Reform UK has the most extreme policy on energy and climate the UK has seen since modern science on the subject began. The party opposes solar; it opposes wind; it opposes batteries, for God's sake. Its policy is "drill, drill, frack Lincolnshire".
Once again: Reform
is largely funded by fossil fuels.

The main defence Tice wielded was that the IPC recently abandoned its always implausible
"RCP8.5" scenario - the worst-case, which predicted coal use doubling or tripling this century.
İronically, Tice himself is the British politician who would do more than anything else to bring about that polluted world.

“This is a dark day for Britain” howls Reform’s Zia Yusuf on the govt’s decision to immediately ban crypto and cap foreign donations to political parties. Almost as if he doesn’t give a shit about democracy or patriotism and cares much more about money, no matter how dirty and corrupt it is. (Times)
Cap on overseas gifts risks Farage’s funding…

Extracts:

Political donations from Britons living abroad will be capped — a decision that could cut off Reform UK’s biggest donor.

Steve Reed, the communities secretary, said it would not be “fair” to continue to allow Reform to accept “gamechanging” donations from people based overseas.

Nigel Farage’s party accused Labour of “choking off legal funding for its main rival” after the decision, which limits donations from overseas Britons to £100,000 a year. Donations made with cryptocurrency will also be outlawed.

Both rules will take effect immediately.

Christopher Harborne, a Britishborn tycoon who lives in Thailand, donated £9 million to Reform in December, the largest donation to British politics from a living person. Harborne would be unlikely to qualify for such sizeable donations under the new rules, government sources said.

The restrictions were announced after a review from Philip Rycroft, a former senior civil servant, into foreign interference in British democracy.

Zia Yusuf, Reform’s home affairs spokesman, called Rycroft a “leftist political activist” and vowed to open an investigation into his background if the party wins power.

“This is a dark day for Britain,” Yusuf said. “Reform receives a large, perfectly lawful donation from a British citizen and Labour responds by rushing through a new law to prohibit him from making such a donation again. This is how fast the machinery of government moves when it wants to protect itself … This Starmer regime is authoritarian.”

Reed said that Rycroft was raising a “question of fairness”. He said: “Is it fair that a British national who chooses to live permanently abroad, who chooses to pay their taxes only abroad and not in the UK can make donations so big that they are game-changing for British democracy?”
