This is beautiful, and really resonated with me - I also spent too long in shared houses, and also adopted a slightly damaged cat the moment I had my own space. George became a very loving friend to me but he never lost his fear of strangers and always hid if anyone else came round.
Closeup on the face of a black cat. He's sitting on my lap with his chin resting on my arm.

Bought these redfish fillets from the counter in Waitrose earlier. The lad asked if I had a preference and I just said "two about the same size please." Hmm. 🍜
Two fish fillets on a board. One is about twice the size of the other.

This is a much better location to enjoy the eclipse from than the Orpington Sainsbury's, where I was working in 1999. No idea how this happened but I seem to have captured it in the lens flare.

Oh man, this was an amazing burger. Boysterous Burger at the Fountain Head in Brighton. 🍜

There was rain. I took off my glasses and looked, there were some tiny pinpricks of moisture.
Screenshot of a WhatsApp conversation with my wife.

At 16:05 I say Rain with many, many exclamation marks. She immediately replies: my washing!

Two minutes later, with a note of disappointment, I reply: Tiny bit of drizzle, anyway.

Well, one thing led to another, and now we're looking after a juvenile sparrow.
A tarmac drive. It has some unusual accoutrements: a saucer of water, a scattering of birdseed and a young sparrow sitting on the ground looking at them with apparent interest.

Mixed tacos from Casazul in the Open Market. Can't decide between the pibil or the mole as my favourite but they were all excellent. Really good service too 🍜
Top-down view of my lunch. A bowl of rice and refried beans, and another bowl containing three colourful tacos. A glass of spicy lime soda in the corner. The tablecloth is a pleasing bright blue.

Mrs H inherited two rhubarb plants at her allotment and the first crop was... woody. I ate it but it took about an hour to cook down. That plant has now gone dormant and other has suddenly started growing like there's no tomorrow!

I'd absolutely love an electric version of a DS/GS/CX/BX and I feel like the market is there for comfort, light weight, style and space.
An Olympic Blue Citroën BX estate, parked up in the camping field at the annual Cropredy folk festival. They were spacious five-seat family cars with a big boot, they had an incredibly comfortable ride and they were fuel efficient thanks to light weight.

Found this in a charity shop a couple of years ago and it went up today. I think it looks great, the exterior just needed a little bit of #greyhound
Close-up photo of the front of a house, focused on a metal hanger for a hanging basket outside the front door. It's a silhouette of four greyhounds. If you happen to recognise it, it looks a lot like the Wimbledon Greyhound Welfare logo.

A shop closure has revealed a little bit of retail archeology. I don't remember this at all!
A shop front. The shop has closed down and the sign has been removed, revealing the old sign "Hallmark - when only the best is good enough." I'd guess it dates from the 80s or 90s.

Pretty sure this is the first time this year we've exported more than we imported, that's a profit on the day! First time I've worn a t-shirt in 2026 too, not a cloud in the sky all day.
Screenshot of the MyEnergi app showing that we imported 7.6kWh and exported 8kWh today. We've used 12.2kWh from solar or battery, nothing left but TV and lighting this evening so that's mostly it for the day.

Totally true. I once fostered a neglected dog when her owner went into hospital, entirely due to the actions of the landlady at the owner's local. She probably saved both person and dog.

My presentation skills haven't improved but that Valentine dinner was delicious. Not even boasting, most of it was down to the quality of the meat. Don't think I've ever had a steak that tender. 🍜

#BurnsNight dinner. I bloody love #haggis, really should have it more often. I went for gravy rather than the classic whisky cream sauce, just really fancied it (the Good Food veggie gravy recipe) 🍜
A plate of haggis, roast potatoes, mixed swede and carrot mash. There's a jug next to it, you can't see the contents of the jug but it's a dark traditional British gravy.

I'm up to The Undiscovered Country in the current rewatch. I was only 11 when it came out but I do remember seeing it at the cinema. Watching as an adult I get something new every time - WoK will always be my favourite but this is objectively a better film. Every line resonates with the Cold War.
Movie poster for Star Trek 6. It shows a very stylised version of the starship Enterprise flying over a Klingon face, with the film title and release date (13 December 1991) superimposed in suitably exciting movie poster fonts

Boiled this swede under a lid for 40 minutes, mashed it and it was still stringy and hard - far too unpleasant to eat. Had it been hanging around since last autumn? Or did I cock it up somehow? 🍜
Two dinner plates which have been cleaned of food except for the horrible stringy swede. No idea what I did wrong.

Cooked on gas for the first time in a long time, in this lovely floating caravan. Simplest thing I could think of - carbonara 🍜
Silver Mystique. She's a Norfolk Broads cruiser, probably built in the 1970s or 1980s. She's the shortest and lowest boat at the staithe but that just makes her the most manoeuvrable.

Saw this and thought of @dreadships.bsky.social

Most people probably don't realise but on a day like this there will be hundreds of fallen trees. They last a very long time but not forever. I'm going to guess this one was a sapling when the bungalows were built.
A recently fallen tree in a mid 20th century housing estate. It's gone at an angle which has demolished a fence but not, thankfully, a house. For context it fell during the 20 minutes or so it took me to walk to Tesco and back this afternoon.

Wot range anxiety? The festival was amazing - better than it's been for years, we thought. The new focus was really good for it.

It's about a 300 mile round trip for us: drop the dog off at my folks, stay the night before the festival at a pub nearby, pick the dog up then home.
A closeup on the face of a greyhound. She's sound asleep, laying on a beige carpet with her front paw over her head in a way that's really characteristic due her. General viewers won't know this from the image but it was taken in my parents' house and was sent to us while we were away and they were looking after her.

Back from a road trip! My favourite weekend of the year, the Cropredy music festival.
View from the top of the Cropredy Festival arena field. There's a big sky above, sunshine and clouds, a field full of excited people waving their arms below and a big stage off in the distance. This is my favourite place in the world for the second weekend in August.

As the very silly "wind farms are ugly" discourse is doing the rounds again I thought I'd share a couple of shots from the tour of the Rampion that we did back in 2020. Just bask in these glorious, quiet and elegant machines.

Simon Jenkins being wrong alert. This is far from the worst thing about this piece, which comes close to praising fascism, but this detail caught my eye - why is a lighthouse beautiful and a wind turbine not (a desecration, elsewhere in the piece). Does he think nobody objected to the lighthouse?
Screenshot from the piece. "The course also has the most exquisite view over an old lighthouse to the prominent island of Ailsa Craig across the water. There is no question: the turbines spill the setting."

The texture of this was amazing, creamy like burrata in the middle with a crispy exterior.Three plates: kimchi, tofu maki rolls and chicken yakitori skewers. I'm late posting this - always a bit rubbish putting personal stuff on here - but I could not be more proud of these lads completing the London to Brighton cycle ride in aid of the Liz Clarke-Saul fund for research into adamantinoma.
Three men in proper cycling gear holding serious road bikes and looking very pleased with themselves. They're all wearing medals. There's a Finish line in the background which they'd passed through a few minutes earlier. It's on Madeira Drive in Brighton with those distinctive Victorian arches behind. It's a sunny day with just a few clouds in the sky. They're the family that I'm incredibly lucky to have married into.

I've looked at council and police websites and there doesn't seem to be any easy to report this so here's a social media shaming: pavements on each side of the road blocked by parked cars forcing pedestrians into the road.
