Russia’s Winter Offensive Begins—Ukraine Has an Answer
I examine Russia’s large overnight strike on Kyiv and Ukraine’s energy infrastructure: nearly 190 attack drones alongside ballistic missiles, more than 11 hours of air-raid alerts, power and water disruptions, and reported civilian casualties. The central question is whether this was the opening of a winter campaign—or a field test for one. Russia’s focus on the capital’s energy system, combined with mounting damage to economic infrastructure, points to a strategy aimed at civilian endurance as much as battlefield gains.
I also assess Ukraine’s emerging answer to jet-powered Geran-5/Shahed-type drones. Multiple Ukrainian interceptor types have publicly demonstrated kills, but the decisive issue is production volume and timing.
