Especially cool since I've learning about #urban bats a lot in the last months, for a workshop we gave with @krawall-verein.at

Find of the day : a Noctule 🦇 wing in the street! Pretty cool. They're Vienna's biggest bats, and they're pretty common overall. The photo is slightly 'gory', since it's really just a wing. And not in super good shape even. #wien #cityWildlife #bats
A bat wing on the red asphalt floor. The membrane is more than half destroyed, and the forearm seems to be broken. But you can still clearly see it's from a bat. There's even a piece of light fur on the shoulder. A euro coin serves as scale, and giving away that this is no small bat : fully extended, the wing might be around 14cm.

Leaf feet
Photo of a leaf-footed bug, Leptoglossus oppositus, standing on a dead leaf. The bug is dark brown with long red-brown and orange antennae and legs, with the hind pair of legs sporting the wide leaf-shaped protrusions that give this group of bugs their common name.

tiens je découvre que le verbe 'prober' en Français est considéré comme régional. Je suppose qu'on ne compte pas l'usage de l'adjectif "probant" qui à mon sens est répandu partout en Europe francophone (en tous cas je crois).

We are today in a situation where we need to seriously reconsider #entomophagy as an option in the Western world. We should not forget that this cultural division is nowadays very impacted by systemic racism, and the fact that it has biological genetic manifestations doesn't change this!

Turns out Homo sapiens mostly stopped eating insects in Eurasia a while ago, while other species and Homo sapiens populations outside of Eurasia continued. In general this is explained by interactions between ecological and cultural factors.

Insects as #food can be studied in ancient human populations by looking at genes coding for enzymes degrading insect chitin, and also by analyzing remaining DNA in dental tartar on human #fossils. This is pretty cool. #insects www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...

Apparently, they are present in freshwater all around the world, but here mostly as polyps, only rarely producing sexually-reproducing medusae. I'm certainly happy I had the opportunity to see and swim with them! They are completely harmless if you're not plankton. #biology #ecology

Marker drawing of a horned sungem hummingbird. He is nectar robbing, a tactic that this bird will sometimes resort to when the shape of the flower is not compatible with their beak. Instead of normal pollination, the bird will poke a small hole at the base and extract the nectar from there.

The host of the show postulates that it's inspired by insect biology, in which sometimes only one sex is winged. But in insects, if one sex only is winged, it tends to be males! It makes a lot more sense, since they are usually lighter than females.

Actually I know it's pretty standard in France, but I don't know for other countries... I would guess there's something like this in most countries of Western Europe, but on the other hand I know school in France has been placing the Republic where the church use to be... So it might be otherwise.

I think in a lot of places, 'civic education' is pretty standard. It isn't activism, and it's often not done great, but I think it goes in the right direction. At least, activism relies a lot on a good understanding of civic society, just to make sure you actually have impact.
